A few years ago, I had the opportunity to visit the Bacardi factory in Puerto Rico. I didn't realize the family originated from Cuba, then moved to Puerto Rico. It was a fascinating tour consisting of a documentary about the family, brewing process, storage, bottling, and of course tasting. They had some flavors that were only available at the site.

I enjoyed the tour and the knowledge of the entire process, however, I cannot tell you how the Bacardi was because I don't drink. Cheers :)

Why rum is bad for you

Never have been much of a liquor drinker, but sometimes an exception has to be made

Way back in 90’s I was on a short leave to Montego Bay, Jamaica. Fairly peaceful night as only 10 or so of us had leave, until US Mississippi, a CGN pulled into MoBay some of her Goat Locker inhabitants rented about every “apartment” (Some decent 2nd floor rooms at Doctors Cave Beach Resort there were more like Apartments than hotel rooms) and the party began It soon became apparent they looted the ships stores from the food the brought with them

If you have never been to Doctors Cave, it is or was a decent place to let off steam. The dining room/lounge sort of opened onto a nice outdoor pool deck with a grand piano and great entertainers

A few of us were having a good time drinking away on ice cold Red Stripes until a couple Senior Chiefs asked to join us and serious destruction of brain cells began

For some reason we couldn’t convince the waiters that we wanted to buy the Draft Red Stripe by the pitcher rather than the short glasses they served it in, they just couldn’t keep up when a group of us started drinking heavily Not only did they not understand the concept of “by the pitcher,” they had no pitchers so being good sailors .we improvised: found a couple champagne buckets and filled them from the tap Well this caused even further confusion as they now had no idea what to charge us so they took an empty bucket, filled it one glass at a time until they figured that one out

As time went on and steaks, lobsters and other food appeared from the apartments, we decided rum would make more sense in our rapidly diminishing available stomach capacity. A little, for lack of better word “bar boy” saw us with the bottles of rum and volunteered to obtain some “raw” rum from a distillery (Now this was the product that is almost pure alcohol, around 190 proof I believe, the stuff that is sent to the Islands several breweries to make into branded rum)

He brought us the bottles and we paid whatever the charge was and started to “drink” this evil liquid. If you have ever consumed “pure” alcohol you know it doesn’t even hit your stomach, it sort of absorbs through the esophagus as it is poured down your throat

One elderly Jamaican waiter looked at us and said "That stuff make your head go away” not exactly sure what he meant, we continued on our merry way drinking, eating and being as stupid as only sailors on shore leave can be

Sure enough, sometime after sunrise I awoke at a poolside table with head in a champagne bucket partially filled with tepid Red Stripe, I only wish my head had “Gone away” as it was a pounding and a thumping as only a night of mixing beer and straight alcohol can bring

Surprisingly, I don’t drink Brugal or any other rum these days

step up to Bacardi Black.

Bacardi is all advertising.
True test is having it neat, or the typical way one prefers but blindfolded.
Any brugal rum will trounce most competition.
A rum from Nicaragua called black label flora in a rectangular bottle, is very similar to brugal.
Most people are simply brainwashed.
Just like the young buying greygoose vodka.
Also, the Dominican mindset for Johny Walker red, blue, black, whatever, is a laugh!
I wonder how many save the bottle and pour the cheap shyt into the bottle to keep their status high.
Do the blindfold test and save your money.

For 2010 I found a site that lists the best sellers as follows:
1 Bacardi
2 Tanduay (Philippines)
3 McDowell No 1 Celebartio
4 Captain Morgan Spiced
5 Havana Club

The Top 5 Best Selling Brands of Rum Worldwide
I have never heard of nos. 2 or 3, but I am not a rum drinker.

And this was for 2010.

Hard to imagine brugal being third worldwide. There are a billion plus indians (India) on the planet and they like their rum.
I remember 7 years ago, a Dominican told me that 95% of ALL rum made in the DR, was drank by Dominicans.
So, with 9 million people on the two thirds of Hispaniola, how can this be even remotely close to third?

Same here, I am no expert but found it hard to believe. I haven't seen it available anywhere besides the area with a big Dominican community in the US, never saw it in bars in Europe (not that I was really looking for it).

seven years ago was before edrington group. now brugal sells in china, japan, india, russia, huge parts of europe, USA, canada and who knows where else. having said that, i also do not believe in this sudden supremacy. and the news did not have any link to support it.
