Laura Peña Izquierdo, president of the Dominican Republic Employers’ Confederation (Copardom), has voiced deep concern over the nation’s alarmingly high traffic fatality rate. According to World of Statistics, the Dominican Republic ranks first globally, with a staggering 65 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.

The Dominican government has been reticent in contracting technology that would automatically penalize drivers that violate the law. About a decade ago, the government of South Korea offered a technological solution that would remove human discretion from the applying of the fines.

Peña Izquierdo is general manager of her insurance brokerage firm, Peña Izquierdo, Corredores de Seguros and a past president of the Dominican Association of Insurance Brokers.

Peña Izquierdo raised this pressing issue during the opening ceremony of Copardom’s 22nd Congress on Occupational Risk...

“In light of this situation, we propose strategic partnerships to find solutions to this problem,” said Peña Izquierdo, calling for collaboration with Idoppril.

Oh just stop. We need another bureacracy to figure out why the other bureacracies don't effin work.

I honestly have no clue what the laws are here, but below is just example of what I see every time I drive from Boca Chica to San Isidro, Piantini, and/or the ZC:

1. Double lefts
2. Motos on sidewalks
3. Stopping in the right lane and middle lanes.
4. Slow drivers in the left lane of the autopista.
5. Ridiculously fast drivers on the autopista. Estimated at > 140kph.
6. Cutting others off while merging.
7. Not able to stay in lane. Probably due to either being drunk or texting or both.
8. No signals for lane change.

There's probably more but that's what comes to mind.

When driving in the DR you have to understand that without a doubt you're going to see something(s) stupid and need to be prepared.

9. Entering a busy road when you do not have the right of way and you absolutely do have a stop sign and you do not even take the time to glance left or right or brake before you speed out into traffic.

I like this. There was one time though when we were able to drive around and not see anything stupid: The first days of the pandemic... Oh the deserted streets, that was awesome... And we filled up with gas many times as it was cheap....

10. Driving the wrong way on one way streets.
Best interaction I have ever had with a professional taxi driver in POP: He made us reverse for half a block as he would not budge nor admit that he was in the wrong and his excuse was that he wasn't from around here. I had multiple questions for him, including that from where he is, traffic signs are not taught and my wife had to shout at me to close the window and stop arguing... We had traffic coming from behind so we had to wait until those cars would reverse around a corner as well... My blood was boiling at that moment, the most insane interaction I've ever had with Dominican taxi driver... And his car was no junk, all official taxi and he was not young either (about in his 50s...). In the corner of Calle Separacion and Margarita Mears, turning right from Separaci onto Mears...

I should have recorded that and send to DIGESETT...

Unfortunately, the laws in the DR are very laxed , motorcycle, transportation of children on motorcycle, drinking and driving laws not of standard, traffic laws not obeyed, NPolice dont cant enforce traffic laws, AMET is not everywhere in the suburban areas, broken and unsafe cars and trucks on the road.the list goes on

The very first step should be to prohibit the sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks at the gas stations.
I don't think the sales are a problem, and prohibiting the consumption of site could be argued but I think that would only shift the consumption to other locations. Enforcing laws regarding driving under the influence and open containers in the vehicle (and making the penalties harsher if needed) certainly needs to happen.

More laws unenforced.
How about just crushing ever motor and car that run a red light intentionally.
Arrest everyone passing a long string of cars in the oncoming lane, then trying to squeeze in.
And pull a steel cable in front of every moto running the Digisett helmet enforcement stops.

You can pass 1,000 more laws that no one supports, yet some nincompoop Digesett employee wanted to give me a ticket for having a dog sitting in my passenger seat.
And I actually got a ticket for having a non-functioning daytime running light out at night, even though the actual headlight was working.

Go figure

Leaving the baseball game last week, we had a young driver who probably broke every traffic law but we got back in record time.
