Our setup is a bit different... as we do not have street power.
It has been working very well for more than 15 years.

We have four Trace DR3624 (2 are on standby because inverters always give in on a Saturday...).
As the plant is in a smaller building away from the house, I recently installed a voltmeter to monitor the batteries, in case they are low I can turn on the diesel by remote (which hardly ever is necessary).

Hi donP
Your system looks great. I have a few questions as I am currently building a new home and would like to go off grid as well.
What kind of system are you using to charge all of that? Can it run all the bells and whistles i.e.: kids game station, couple flat screens etc.. How about AC units?
Here are my energy needs
The house is being built with styrofoam from floor to ceiling. 3 bedrooms, 3.5 baths. 3400sq/ft 2 floors. gas water heater, gas dryer. 2 flat screens, large fridge, 2 water pumps (one for small pool other for house) 4 AC units, 1 desktop computer and a couple laptops. I don't have a lot of space on the lot so solar would have to go on the roof but I have no idea how many panels I would need to support my needs or if its even possible.
Any suggestions?

How much did you pay for that Trace DR3624 inverter?

I do not remember, that was about 15 years ago...
However, the standby ones I bought used for about 20,000 Pesos each, but again that was a few years ago.

Going Solar

...and would like to go off grid as well.
We never were on the grid. We may have connected to it had it been there when the house was built.

What kind of system are you using to charge all of that?
We use a diesel generator 16kW. It only runs 1:50 hrs. total time per day in 3 intervals, controlled by a small Siemens "Logo!" computer.
On our hill we do not need A/C.
In fact, we have a fire place. :bunny:

I don't have a lot of space on the lot so solar would have to go on the roof but I have no idea how many panels I would need to support my needs or if its even possible.
It can be calculated.
Next month we are going to install 12 panels (of 235 Wp each) and hope to need the diesel only seldom.

A lot of investment - panels of that size cost $200 - $400 each depending on supplier, shipping cost etc.

You must be running a factory to burn that much juice. 1-2 kwh per day is normal for a small apartment without a/c.

Im pretty sure you have considered a wind turbine; would it be less expensive than solar panels?

Horticulturists use ,free, surplus solar power to light plants with LED panels. An extra 7 hours of light a day increases yeilds per sq metre or vertical metre.

Solar panels on my roof:

P100000211.jpg

To get to zero electric bill all sunny days and nights after sunny days after I need another one or two - possibly bigger.
Now bill is 25$ a month - here in LT electric is 15 pesos a unit.

These items such as solar panels are getting cheaper all the time. My 50$ charger will fall into disuse.

Solar cooker is great too.

Considered and laid to rest.
Not cheaper either...

Hey DonP, what does your budget look like for this solar project you are venturing in? I would love to know to see if the same could work for me but at a much smaller scale than yours.

Every Plant is Different.

You need to get detailed quotations from two or three experienced installers who can tailor the plant to your needs.
The Swiss guy I gave the contract to has good references and I know him personally.

In my case the existing batteries and inverters can be used, a charge controller will have to be put in though.

Maybe this one:
