The Dominican Republic ranks as the third most expensive country in Central America for premium gasoline, regular gasoline, and optimal diesel, according to the latest weekly statistical report from the Central American Hydrocarbons Cooperation Committee. The nation is only outranked by Nicaragua and Costa Rica, according to the article published in 7dias.com.do

The government argues that the prices Dominican consumers pay at the pump would be higher without the government subsidies. However, these subsidies are financed by taxpayers through current levies or future borrowing, effectively shifting the burden onto the public.

Premium gasoline costs RD$290.1, regular gasoline costs RD$272.50 and optimum gasoline is RD$239.10.

It is one of the ways the DR government does gets revenue through high taxes on fuel.
And it is a very regressive tax since it hits the poor the hardest.

THANKS G-D FOR THIS. I'm unwilling to even imagine the traffic situation in the DR with cheaper Fuel Prices !!!

It's strange - subsidies and then high taxes. One way to keep people employed, I suppose.

That graph isn't very useful, with no explanation for anything shown.
It would also be helpful if the article or the graph mentioned if it is per gallon or liter. Maybe the graph is in gallons and the article is in liters, maybe not.

The subsidy is on propane and not diesel or gasoline as I understand.
The propane subsidy kept Dominicans from burning wood and deforesting this side of the island. A smart move.

Hmmm... In the article above, which is referring to the prices of gasoline and diesel, it says "The government argues that the prices Dominican consumers pay at the pump would be higher without the government subsidies."

They have been subsidized for a few years now.

it says "The government argues that the prices Dominican consumers pay at the pump would be higher without the government subsidies."
The prices Dominican consumers pay at the pump would be much lower without the government taxes. So what are they subsidizing exactly, their own taxes? There are more taxes in the price of fuel than the fuel costs itself.

And that would be absolute, well, uhm, lets call it nonsense.

And for me and perhaps the other Europeans on this board, regardless of the price, petrol in the DR has always been dirt cheap...
It’s ‘relatively’ cheap in the DR compared to Europe. It is still almost 50% more than in PR according to the article. If a little less tax means subsidizing it’s a great propaganda tool.
