I use "MagicJack". When connected to the internet you can call the US from the DR and anyone in the US can call you here for the price of a local on long distance call to the selected area code. It works well and costs $40.00 the first year and $20.00 every year thereafter. It has been a good cheap service.

I was recently state side, and picked up 2 of those Magicjack units.

Here is the basic information on it.

you get a little device that plugs into your PC's USB port. as soo as you plug it in, it starts to download software/updates. just wait about 2-3 Minutes.

You are not asked for credit card info, just name and address, tip: pick an address of someone in the USA that you know will be calling you a lot, this way it will be a local call for them to call you. also, it is not necessary for the other party to have a PC or magicjack unit.

You will be asked to pick from an Area code and the 3 digit prefix, for example mine starts 1-305-515-**** for Miami.

Into your MagicJack you plug in a standard telephone, I use a cordless one. no need for a VoiP phone like with Skype.

Once set up, you just dial your phone as you would in the USA, all calls to Canada and US are free, yes you can even call cell phones.

and the sweet part is that someone in the US can call you back using their regular phone or cell. they do not require a Magicjack, or anything special.

also if your offline or miss a call, there is an answering system, and the recorded messege is sent to your e-mail address as a .wav audio file.!

The draw back is that a call you make to someone local in the DR. would be seen by Magicjack as an attempt to call the DR from wherever you registered your device. the work around is, if that other person also has a Magicjack, you just call that number ( the USA Magicjack assigned number ) this I have tried, and works great. so in other words, if I want to call My uncle who is also here in Santo Domingo, I just dial his USA magicjack telephone number.

I havent tested this yet, but it should work, Some satellite receivers require a telephone line be connected ( specially multiple receivers ) the receivers "call and report" every once in a while. with magicjack on a pc thats always on, these receivers would be able to keep in touch.

TropicDude,
hey Mate,
careful with recommendations unless you at least tested the stuff for a test call, not that half the island runs the stores and by's magicjacks and then they find out there's some lil bad hint with it.
let us know here when you have your's connected and running.

why to complicate with all of those phone cards.
to call USA from dominican is very cheap from you home.
the rate in codetel is 4.75 a mins. that goes to 14dlls cents. plus 30% you get in long distance calls. you pay more or less 9cents a min.
in tricom calls to usa are free.

I have a magicJack connected and running.

It works just fine. I paid $40 for the unit and the frist year of use and that's it. I've been bugging people in the US I haven't talke to in years.

Twenty dollars for unlimited free calls to the US with a US based call back number is unbeatable.

I also use Skype for free Skype to Skype communications with friends outside the US.

Oh i have talked on my Magicjack for hours already when i made my post.

so as long as you have a decent broadband connection, it works great, I have received calls also from the US,

the part in my previous post that I believe you got confused with is regarding, using the magicjack to allow Dish or Direct TV satellite receivers (with US paid subscriptions ) to be connected to the magic jack. In other words, if you have a DISH or DirecTV IRD, and order a PPV movie or event, that IRD must be able to report via telephone, these receivers usually do it late at night automatically.

I have not tried that possibility yet, but since there is no special number sequence while dialing with Magicjack ( it works just like a regular house phone) I do not see any difficulty using the MJ also for that purpose.

again , ill make it clear, the magicjack works great, you plug in a regular telephone, and you can make all the free USA/Canada calls you like, and you get a static US Tel number, that you can give to people, they then can call you using whatever service they use.

And if you have a friend lets say in Santo Domingo with MJ, and you live in Sosua, and also have a magicjack, you can also make free calls between you.

Any ideas for those of us that are visiting the DR and want to call home to Canada? Is there a card that works at payphones in the DR to call home to talk to the kids in Canada whilst on vacation?

Thanks in advance,

G.

Seems I have a quad band cell phone.... after reading all I have to do is purchase a Sim card? Where can I do this? seeing as how I am getting on a bus after arriving at the airport in PC... I saw it mentioned I could purchase a pre-paid Sim at the airport... however I have never seen this before.. is this correct? and will it work at Punta Cana Princess? What should I expect to pay for this card?

Please forgive my ignorance.. This is my first time trying to figure out how to call home, without spending a small fortune.. 6 months ago I was billed 180.00 CDN for a 10 minute call from the hotel payphone when I called home collect.

Thanks folks.

Orange, 100 pesos for the SIM card. Then you need to buy minutes. Cost of calls to North America is the same as a local call. Sorry, don't recall if there is an Orange shop in PUJ.

The cheapest way to call!!!!

The cheapest way to call would be with Magicjack. It's like $19.00 dollars a year for unlimited calling to US and Canada. The way that it works is with a internet connection and computer. Connect the Majicjack to usb and set it with a number. After, anyone on US can call you to your majicjack number and you can call from DR anyone on US phone lines or cell phones unlimited.

I bought one for my sister in DR and she calls all the time. And I can call her from here US to her magicjack number for me is local call. This is by far the best and cheapest way of calling.

I have an iphone and tried to use google voice while in Rep. Dom. I turned on airplane mode and connected to wifi. I couldnt make any calls. I brought a US phone with me and had it unlocked for $5 in Higuey; the price was $20 in PC (I only checked one place by the Texico) done in 5min. Minuets are extremely easy to add almost anywhere.

Im not sure of the issue but I get a lot of spam email when connected in Rep. Dom.
