I simply don't know whats the big deal about eating and going to camp david. I have been there a few times, but I wouldn't go there if I didn't have to. I guess its a good tourist attraction.

I'm not really looking for a tourist attraction and food isn't a priority. What I'm looking for is a romantic ambiance. Dinner under the stars, perhaps horseback riding during the day.
Would you be able to recommend a more romantic getaway for a couple of days and nights.

Personally I still think Camp David Ranch is a good choice for a romantic getaway :cheeky:

Thank you Steve and all others for their replies.

All: If you know of a reliable taxi driver that can take us from Camp David to a romantic dancing place let me know. Any recommendations?

Go to jarabacoa. Horses, rivers, magnificent view of the mountains and not to mention, water falls. Oh but, you will not be able to go dancing. no decent place for dancing there.

if you can plan a cloudless night. you should be able to get to a few dance places in less than20 minutes...even if you went all the way to Los Colinas....

is there a shortcut to Tamboril from that area of Santiago

There is a nice big high roofed club there that is kinda romantic depending on who is playing. The name ends in Altagracia..and the owner actually is the same owner of the resturant the last NYC get together was held at!

Camp David can be romantic but I am not thinking of many dance clubs that ROMANTIC come to mind... they either are usually toooo crowded, or have the wrong kind of music....

Tribecca was probably the most "romantic" if you can call it that , place i have been to in town. because the music wasnt too loud we had a nice corner all to ourselves and we kinda just stood up to dance with in a few feet of our table....but if the place fills up too much..you may be squeezed out of the romantic factor ha ha

Thanks Bob that is great. It sounds like Camp David is the place to be and that Altagracia may be a good dancing place after dinner. Do you thing Jarabacoa is close and nice enough for a day trip?

Camp David is a very nice place to visit, but as you may have heard the food is just ok, and ends up being a little pricy. That being said they have decent american bfasts and I imagine the lobster tail for dinner should be ok as it's really hard to mess up.

Dancing - stick to Santiago as there are a lot of clubs to choose from.

They just redid the road up the mountain and actually have two access roads from Carr Luperon - don't worry about going up there at night or otherwise. I go there quite frequently with some buddies as it is only 10 min from my house.

chipo... I have eaten there twice. The first time I had the Lobster....it wasnt good.....it was like stale.

But I have never had a good Lobster anyplace in the DR.

I am not sure they can do shellfish very good there.

We both had meals with shrimp in Cabarete this past weekend... they cooked and served the whole shrimp...what a collosal pain to pluck a whole cooked shrimp from a cream sauce and have to break it and shell it....

never again!!!

Bob

I have actually had some fantastic lobster at the restaurant that is either on top of the Hotel Aloha Sol or Hodelpa. Just remember they don't cut the bad stuff out here.

Also, if you want great seafood, take Taivina to one of the La Bahia restaurants, either in los jardines or the one near la 27 by Ochoa.

bob, if that was at la casita de papi, next time just ask them to shell the shrimp. they will. i agree having to deal with that mess on your hands is not fun, but the shrimp & sauce there is very good

No I think it was ONNOs.

the sauce in Tavinas meal was excellent and i poured it over the rice I had, after I gave up on the shrimp... Tavina left about 8 in her dish!!!!!

there was a fench resturant that came recomended after we bought Tavina new Bikini at a shop owned by a fench woman....but I couldnt find it...when On the beach after i went east from Oshays a few places nothing was lit up...meaning ..there wasnt anything going on down there...at least out on the beach...all the activity and dining was within 100 yards either way of ONNOs area.

la casita de papi's is the 2nd restaurant west of onno's. well known for it's shrimp.

immediately east of onno's is calamar en folie, perhaps what you were looking for, but last friday the owner said he was closing for 4 or 5 weeks of vacation. immediately after that is voy voy & pitu, not exactly fine dining at night. grill15 steakhouse is also there. not much else eastward until the point, there you'll find the new steak house that HB wrote about a while back & otra cosa, perhaps the most expensive(?) restaurant in cabarete.

we're taking this thread off track, if you want more info on cabarete dining, perhaps open a new thread or pm me with any questions.

Chip, thanks. Are there a couple of clubs you can recommend to me that'll be easy to get to?

Contact AZB, he is the resident expert. My wife doesn't like to dance so we don't go out to clubs.

Be sure to explain what type of atmosphere and clientele you are looking for.

what kind of dancing do you do...or are looking to try?

do you know how to dance mergenge, or bachata?

and do you know salsa and want to dance it?

where ever you decide to go..i suggest you just do ti with a TAXI

where ever you are staying, the driver will know how to get to Camp David probably.

then he can hang around until dinner is over and take you to any number of places, then back home...

the three trips would worth his waiting around for you... and you dont have to worry about getting lost.

I dance salsa, mambo style or regular. Yes I dance, even the commercials my mom used to say. But I would stick to bachata, merengue. But I would take your advice about driving and leave it to a cabbie recommended by Camp David. Thanks again.
