Can Cash Be Used to Pay the Exit Fine at Puerto Plata Airport?

I'm planning to leave the DR soon and I need to pay the exit fine. The problem is that i don't keep much money in my bank account, but
I can cover the fee in cash. I heard in Punta Cana and La Romana they no longer accept cash, is the same true of Puerto Plata Airport?
Also, if they do take cash, can I pay in pesos?

A friend tried to pay cash in early November at POP but they only took plastic.

Last time I left via POP, (June), I made inquiries and was told they no longer accept cash. I insured there was enough pesos in my BHD account to cover the amount I'd be charged and was able to pay in pesos, using a Dominican debit card. As I paid using the card, I again asked is there any way I can pay with cash. I was told No !

Since the answer seems to vary, you certainly don't want to show up at the airport unable to pay with a card and be told no cash. I wonder, if you went to the sub-migracion office on Calle Beller here in POP, if you could pay your overstay a day or two ahead of time using cash? If it's convenient, might be worth checking out. I recall paying for something in that office several years ago when seeking my temporary residency, so I know they do handle payments.

It seems being able to pay cash has to do with the phase of the moon. Assume no cash payments are allowed any more.

I have never heard of anyone being able to pay the exit fine for illegally overstaying a tourist card at the Migracion office on Beller in Puerto Plata,
but you could probably call them instead of wasting your time going there.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'm talking to a friend back in the states and he is going to wire me the funds and then when I get home I will reimburse him, he has known me for years and knows I'm good for it. I also wanted to confirm the fees, I've overstayed for ten years and read online the fee is $1,150 is that correct?

It’s more than that, over $1,600. Do the math with the chart above

My neighbor definitely paid there. I don't know when so yeah - might be wise to call ahead. Of course the answer may change when you get there,

If you have enough cash, can just put it in the bank and use the card, why need money wired...!

Also if its one day over 10 years, they will charge you an extra year, watch out for that, 98k + 7k...

No Bank of America in the Dominican Republic, not that I've seen. I came back to the DR in the summer of 2015, July I believe, so technically I haven't been here for ten years yet. It will be ten years by this July, but I plan to leave before then.

I just checked my passport, I was wrong, I arrived back in the DR on August 20th, 2015, that means it won't be ten years until August 20, 2025. So the fee will be between 84,000 and 98,000 pesos. correct?

Plan for 98000, if less you still have the cash and if it is 98000, then you will be able to pay. I would even suggest having 10% more, in case the fines have risen since Nov 2023.

Perhaps some DR1 can post the latest if they are departing between now and next few months. I myself will do so in March and I will update this thread when I do

Did they make him pay again at the airport? I have heard that happens a lot when people try to prepay the overstay fine in Santo Domingo to extend.

I don't want to take this thread off-topic but it would have most definitely have been cheaper to go with residency... None of my business though...

You're correct. My mother and brother passed away and I need to return to the U.S. to take care of my niece so it will be over ten years before I return. When I get back I will be ready to buy property and then I will do things by the book and get residency so I can avoid these fines in the future.

Eh, not sure about that. Residency seems to cost me around 200$ a year for cedula + carnet. Maybe even a bit more.

There again, I am an eternal " temporary" residency...... Because, because, well because I am lazy, I guess.
