To all the people whose spouses have arrived in Canada, how long did it take to get the actual PR card after they arrived?
Does anyone know if you can travel outside of Canada with the paper visa or do you need the actual PR Card?
Thanks

For the second part of your question check this thread http://www.dr1.com/forums/visas/98513-countries-dominicans-may-enter-visa-free-more-info.html under the heading Visa Free when Holding a Valid Resident Permit for one of the Shenghen European Countires
(Countries with a ** a Valid US,Canadian,European Visa would be enough to Enter Visa Free)

A Dominican can not travel to every country once receiving a Canadian PR. Some countries still require a visa until you become a Canadian citizen

your PR card comes up to thirty days later - you can't travel with your paper - ours' came exactly thirty days after we got home - you can sign up for a SIN and health care with the record of landing but not for a driver's license - or start the driver's license process yet.

Anna's right regarding travel outside of canada - you still have to verify if they need a visa depending on where you go - if its just home to DR you're ok.

always keep your original record of landing even after you get the PR card - ours is safely tucked away in the safety deposit box - and once we have other ID like a license so will the PR card.

your record of landing is in the envelope and they say its to be opened by immigration officers once inside canada -but the westjet employee opened it when we signed in - I almost freaked out - as the embassy said don't open this it must be opened by an immigration officer -but when we got to canada - teh immigration officer didn't say anything about it being opened.

the PR card is mailed to the address used in your application. so make sure that's right - you can phone a special number to be sure the address is correct, and comes up to thirty days later - though that processing time changes - its on the website.

sorry - after posting I thought maybe I should be clearer. here's a link:

ok thank you. A friend is getting married in Mexico in November and I am definitely going. I was just wondering about the PR card, if my husband gets here in time, if we will be able to get a PR card in time!
thanks
C.

Your spouse will need the PR card to reenter Canada. The visa in the passport is crossed out once they land the first time.

I would also suggest that your spouses do not carry their PR cards in their wallets (unless they are travelling). A friend lost his wallet - with his PR card - and it was not easy for him to get it replaced and it took several months. It was not as simple as contacting CIC and having a replacement card sent like a driver's license. I'm sure they want to make sure people are not falsely claiming a lost card to give to someone else. During that time he could not travel outside of Canada.

sorry Anna if this is off topic and not the right thread to be posting this info :)

Johana your help is always more than welcome here. These things that come up later are good to know no matter what thread it's in. ;)

Thank you

on another note has anyone ever experienced trouble re-entering canada with a PR card - my husband is considering heading home for easter - and I'm all worried there will be some complication - though that's not really rational -after waiting so long you aren't really rational about those things - but it would be good for him -as I'm super busy at work at that time and he has lots of family that are coming home for it this year... and there's some good flight prices...

hey Kacy,
my husband has reentered Canada from the DR and from USA and hasn't had any problems. Leaving Puerto Plata he had to show it at check in and again when we landed on our way to Immigration (but everyone had to show their passports) and then again once we got to immigration. So no worries ;)

Thank you Johana - I was really worried - but think he deserves a trip home after surviving his first canadian winter with hardly even a complaint! I think I complained more than he did - saying when can we go back...
