That, is an oxymoron. I deal with the media in Canada, and believe me, they OFTEN get their facts wrong.

What was printed on this story does sound highly suspicious. And I think "the scam" could have happened either way. However, without knowing the entire story I would not cast stones at either party.
That sums it up pretty well, and we'll probably never know the real truth.
All the parties involved will want to colour it to suit their agendas.

Facts always confirmed

You are not talking about "the Canadian media" here, you are taking on the CBC, which like the BBC, has the highest standards of journalism. It doesn't rely on unsubstantiated fact. Professional journalists confirm their facts. And they do not worry about bad PR for the tourism industry. The couple involved here are also professionals. However DR1 tries to spin this, Canadians believe the CBC and go to less dangerous places.

I understand your trust of the CBC, and it certainly is more trustworthy than many other networks, but you have to read carefully.
1st) The story's headline is that a couple files a complaint.
Of this there is little doubt, but this does not substantiate the truth of their story.
2nd) CBC was no more there than we were and their investigation of the facts amounts to the following
Marco Soria, the manager of the Sunscape The Beach resort, told CBC News that a Dominican guest claimed the Canadians had stolen a cellphone and some clothing.
Soria said the other parties in the dispute were a Dominican businessman and his wife. He said he put the Sinnotts, the other couple and a security manager in his SUV to straighten out the mess. He said the Sinnotts were not placed in cells.
"They were absolutely entitled to call the embassy, but they never did it," Soria told CBC News.
"They were so drunk, so drunk ? trust me," Soria said.
In other words, they offer up the denial of the Sinnott's facts, as told by the hotel manager.
So, assuming you believe everything that CBC says is true, what we have here is a story told by two different parties, in two contradicting versions, and CBC is not stating that one is more true than the other.
They are simply relating what the Sinnotts told them and what Marco Sonia told them
So they can still hold onto their integrity as a news network, but they do not substantiate either story, nor do they even hint that one story is less true than the other.
Thus, one cannot deduce that the Sinnotts version is true, just because one has confidence in the CBC.
One can only believe that an incident happened, of which we are highly unlikely to ever know the whole truth.
I personally do not believe the Sinnotts version, as there are too many holes in the story.
Ask any of the long term expats if they ever saw the bribe they just paid, get divied up amongst those who were going to share it.
I bet not one single one has ever seen that, yet that's what Mr. Sinnott would have us believe.
Well, I don't believe him.

I don't think anyone is insinuating or even thinking that the Sinnotts were trying to pull a scam.
If I were to guess, I would think they got too drunk, and some situation arose that got out of control, not totally their fault.
They probably upset someone, and were made to pay.
Just a guess, of course, but it might make more sense than their version.

The money exchange is always discreet. When there are several people benefitting the others stand aside and look the other way.

Even the discussion of a bribe is indirect.

The Sinnotts' version doesn't make sense.

Besides the wife has "hockey eyes". She's probably been driving a Zamboni with a bad exhaust sytem for years. :cheeky:

Exactly!

Makes sense to me too......
Also never been asked for a bribe either.....but the occasional cerveza, Christmas gift,Easter gift etc.etc.

The bad publicity is deserved, simply because it was allowed to happen.

I'd tend to agree. Have to say I scratched my head when I read that the Manager put the Canadians and the Dominican couple into an SUV with a security official. The two 'warring parties' in a confined space with a guachiman as............referee? Really destined to improve matters! ;)

my original purpose of posting this was quite clear: dr tourism has to clear the air on this asap. in a couple of days this thread has 1000 views. obviously dr tourism is in a "damned if you do; damned if you don't" position...but they need the matter investigated correctly and have the air cleared on this asap. it's damaging to tourism no matter whose side one takes.

I don't think we will ever know.
I suspect they know that if they leave it alone, it slowly just slides away, as new news hits the market and old stories get forgotten.

hello!!!!! the manager of the hotel says that a dominican guest of the hotel claimed to have had a cell phone stolen. So for this to be the canadian couple's scam..they have to get the manager in on it as well as the dominican guest....they fly all the way to the DR for less than one day...try a scam for a lousy $1,000 and then pay $3000 to fly home the next day!!!!!!!!!

then put their mug all over the papers so to make it easier for their next scam. PUUUULLLEASE!!!!

Come on Marco.....all the missing pieces that dont add up...are not needed...this SCAM has the classic Dominican MO written all over it.
Just imagine all the ones that dont ever get any publicity...either because they are smaller or the people just do it and feel lucky to leave...we read about the exact same thing happening all the time in little scenarios all over the country all the way down to the POLICE.

the dirtbags pick their book worm looking marks carefully, hoping to use some seemingly plausable scenario to work their scam, with the help of fear.

They really believe that this stuff gets swept under the rug.......with their connection locally, they feel invulnerable. Add in the confidence doing this scam a dozen times with out a hitch gives them.

This will happen more and more......as the divide between the haves and the have nots widens....

You have to have clean hands to make a valid claim.
I know in my heart of hearts, that when he says the 3 people who scammed him divied up the money in front of him, that he is lying.
Every and any long term expat will tell you that simply cannot be.
So he lied.
Now I don't believe anything he says, because I perceive him as a liar.

I have to agree with Rocky on this one as I've been to the resort where the couple were supposedly scammed. I didn't stay in the resort but went there to loose a few dollars at their casino.

The hotel is massive and has hundreds of guests and employees constantly milling around the resort so why didn't one of the other guests respond to their calls for help? There had to be other employees on staff that weren't in on the scam, why didn't they help?

It's just not in the Dominican nature to stand by and not attempt to help when possible.

I agree that it doesn't make since for the couple to spend $3000.00 to get home (which by the way equals 2 first class tickets) only after arriving the day before, but what was it that actually happened that made them leave early. I think we're only getting a little fraction of the story.

Wow,,,, There are a lot of views on what happened at the resort and who's telling the truth?

Also a lot of views taking a few digs at Newfies. I'm just sitting here in my Igloo with my Tims coffee reading this, while my Fiance is out shining up our Zamboni.

Don't Surprise me that the couple may have lied.... What Surprises me is the emphasis put on "Newfie's". Well because they were loaded.... and being Newfies.... they were definitely loaded.... their Lieing (LMAO)
Why don't you get the facts before you rant and accuse????

Sounds to me that there is one or two people here who have gotten off the topic of the scam and just want to discriminate Newfoundlanders??

Whatever the case is ..... I stand and applaud anyone who thinks their funny by the comments made and if you like I would love to invite you over for a glass of Ice cubes and we can chat about Newfoundlanders in General???

I mean come on.... that's what it's turning out to be??

I've met some fine people from the maritimes. Many are Red Sox fans. I like that.

The subjects of this thread have a story with holes in it.

Keep your head up and back check, eh.

I do believe that Celt was just being friendly.
If you're going to be angry at anyone, I may have been the first to mention the Newfie aspect in the thread.
A lot of nationalities would like to claim to be the world's most accomplished drinkers, but I believe the Newfies can beat any of them, anytime, anywhere.
Heck, most normal mortals would be hospitalized if they drank a bottle of Newfie Screech, while Newfies drink it like water.

I know that Celt was trying to be Friendly. I'm just responding to his post simply asking did he back check before posting as well?

As for Newfies Being able to handle their booze... It's no secrete we can. Just seems to me that the comments made about the two being Drunk were a little discrimnating to me and any Newfoundlander

We all have our point of views, and I'm clearly trying to state mine!

ohhhh and yes I'm sober!!
