PUERTO PLATA.- A group of political leaders from the municipality of Sosúa celebrated a birthday with two cakes celebrating the first year of the collapse of the bridge over the Camú river in the Sabaneta de Cangrejos community.
The sarcastic celebration was carried out by well-known leaders and supporters of the opposition political organizations Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), who accuse the authorities of being "inept and negligent" for not yet having built a new viaduct.
Among those gathered there were former PLD councilor Aquilina Medina, as well as the youth leaders of the FP Marlon Polanco and Brenda Pérez, who gave speeches in the place criticizing that "a year after the Cangrejos bridge fell, the The current government has done nothing."
Likewise, they blew out several candles inserted in two biscuits that had the messages: "We miss you bridge" and "Come back soon" ordering the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) to build without further hesitation the bridge that links the municipalities of Montellano and Sosua.
In the same way, they indicated that the transit from Puerto Plata to the General Gregorio Luperón International Airport and the tourist locations of Sosúa and Cabarete has become torture due to the difficult route to travel after the mishap of the aforementioned bridge.
It is recalled that on the night of April 24, 2022, the breakage of a crosshead caused one of the main beams of the old metal bridge in Sabaneta de Cangrejo to collapse, for which reason the passage was restricted and an alternate route was enabled that begins in Montellano and crosses the places Pancho Mateo, Los Pérez and El Alto de Chila.
Eight weeks ago the government ordered the construction of a new bridge to begin and the old metal structure erected in the place during the Trujillo dictatorship was disassembled, but the work has been paralyzed due to a dispute over the land that will be used by said work.
The government version in this regard states that on the Camú river in Sabaneta de Cangrejos a modern infrastructure will be built with four lanes of post-tensioned concrete and galvanized steel beams resistant to the rolling of vehicles of all denominations and to marine corrosion.
