Can we make a bet and use that 6-lane future widening as the payout criteria.
It would be a posthumous bet for both of us, but I would collect in the afterlife.
Aw heck, why not?

I said that because there are a lot of stretches on the 6 de Nov autopista that were 2 lanes each way with really wide shoulders on both sides.

Now they are 3 lanes on each side and still have really wide shoulders

OK - I figure I have 12 years left - and you ?
Say $100 payable by 2035 (by then it will be worth ~$20) - If Cangrejo bridge is operating with 6 marked travel lanes I pay - if not you pay.
If I'm dead you pay Coconut Hounds and vice versa.

Bet to be cancelled and reconsidered if the bridge doesn't reopen in 2024

None of us who can read this forum will live to see it become a 4 lane road. We will be lucky if they can repave it when it falls apart again.
Drive through Sosua Abajo and Charamicos and look at the buildings that would have to be demolished, same near the Grand Parada and Montellano.
And if they did make it 4 lanes Dominicans would all still try to drive around on the shoulder.
That's true. It would probably make more sense to build a bypass around Sosua Abajo and Sosua, but the hilly terrain behind the towns would make it a hell of a project. And yes, the concept of a shoulder does not exist in the mind of Dominicans, it seems.

Opposition political leaders celebrate the "birthday" of the collapsed bridge in Sabaneta de Cangrejos

Last Update: Friday, April 28, 2023 . By: Antonio Heredia

The sarcastic celebration was carried out by well-known leaders and supporters of the opposition political organizations Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and Fuerza del Pueblo (FP).

PUERTO PLATA.- A group of political leaders from the municipality of Sosúa celebrated a birthday with two cakes celebrating the first year of the collapse of the bridge over the Camú river in the Sabaneta de Cangrejos community.

The sarcastic celebration was carried out by well-known leaders and supporters of the opposition political organizations Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and Fuerza del Pueblo (FP), who accuse the authorities of being "inept and negligent" for not yet having built a new viaduct.

Among those gathered there were former PLD councilor Aquilina Medina, as well as the youth leaders of the FP Marlon Polanco and Brenda Pérez, who gave speeches in the place criticizing that "a year after the Cangrejos bridge fell, the The current government has done nothing."

Likewise, they blew out several candles inserted in two biscuits that had the messages: "We miss you bridge" and "Come back soon" ordering the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) to build without further hesitation the bridge that links the municipalities of Montellano and Sosua.

In the same way, they indicated that the transit from Puerto Plata to the General Gregorio Luperón International Airport and the tourist locations of Sosúa and Cabarete has become torture due to the difficult route to travel after the mishap of the aforementioned bridge.

It is recalled that on the night of April 24, 2022, the breakage of a crosshead caused one of the main beams of the old metal bridge in Sabaneta de Cangrejo to collapse, for which reason the passage was restricted and an alternate route was enabled that begins in Montellano and crosses the places Pancho Mateo, Los Pérez and El Alto de Chila.

Eight weeks ago the government ordered the construction of a new bridge to begin and the old metal structure erected in the place during the Trujillo dictatorship was disassembled, but the work has been paralyzed due to a dispute over the land that will be used by said work.

The government version in this regard states that on the Camú river in Sabaneta de Cangrejos a modern infrastructure will be built with four lanes of post-tensioned concrete and galvanized steel beams resistant to the rolling of vehicles of all denominations and to marine corrosion.

I thought it will be ready for my next trip but the reality is totally different, I only have a couple months left before I head down there.
I will probably will be on foot most of the time as I am no borrowing or renting a vehicle for more than a week or so and I am expecting to spend a couple of months next time.

Meeting in Cangrejos

Yesterday an interesting and important meeting took place, in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Public Works, Roberto Herrera and the owners of the surrounding land, where the Cangrejos Bridge is to be built.

Meeting in Cangrejos

Meeting in Cangrejos

The intention is to reach an agreement between the Dominican state and the landowners so that work on the bridge can continue. The regional director Cibao-Norte MOPC Basilio González, the director of expropriations of the Ministry of Public Works Juan Villar and Leidy Valerio also participated in the above meeting. The activity took place in one of the halls of the provincial government, from where they went to the community of Cangrejos to inspect the land with the owners and finally to reach an agreement for a fair price. There was an atmosphere of respect and cordiality among all present.

I've seen that before, I participated at a one year anniversary of a pothole in Santiago.

We used to have an entity/person who would have their picture taken sitting in a chair and fishing in large potholes full of water here in SD. I haven't seen him in a while.

I stick by my prediction - we now won't see the bridge open in 2024
Probably not, although there's a bit of muttering and annoyance, the matter of fact is that with the alternate route actually being drivable and now at least not having any mayor interruptions regularly, there's not an incentive for anyone to actually do anything about the bridge. So I would not be surprised that when the elections are over, this bridge problem will be "forgotten" for the next 4 years. So don't be surprised if by 2027 we're still having this thread 😂
