Anyone have DR Car/SUV insurance? Full coverage?

What is the cost? Is it paid monthly? quarterly? annually?

What are the best companies for this?

Do they actually pay a claim if filed or just take your money and leave you high and dry in an accident?

Thanks for the info.

Haven't had an accident yet, and I have full coverage including casa de conductor for a 2007 Santa Fe. Last year it was 37,000 pesos through the BHD. The actual name of the insurance company escapes me at the moment.

I am through BanReservas. Complete coverage including casa de conductor for a 2007 VW Golf is 18,500 pesos. Never had a claim yet but friends who use the same agent and company have had an accident and they said it was handled very well. I pay it all up front so I don't know if they offer a payment plan. I would really recommend the casa de conductor as that is the part that if you are arrested you are placed in a hotel rather than jail while you await trial.
Best of luck with your car and insurance.

I had an accident with a one year old SUV back in 2008 (aquaplaning), I damaged several cars and my own car with a total damage of several million pesos, just short of the maximum amount covered and of course it was my fault. Insurance paid everything including a rented car for some time except the "deductible" of about RD$20,000.00. I was fully insured with "Monumental de Seguros". Drivers license was up to date and no alcohol involved, yes, they did a blood test.
Cost was roughly 5 % of the value of the car per year.

we've had colonial for many years, for all our cars. the only time miesposo had a more serious accident, in his montero, the insurance paid the difference without fuss but they insisted on replacing some parts rather than fixing them so it took longer. we had to pay some money too, few thousand pesos. i understand that the insurance has a low bar limit: if the damage is for less than 8,000 pesos you need to pay yourself, if it is more you need to pay this first 8,000 yourself (i cannot remember the actual number but i think it was 8k in our case).

currently we pay 29,000 pesos a year for my 2008 grand vitara. full coverage. we pay in installments, i believe.

Wow, you guys are astonishing me - we had quote from 3 companies for full coverage on a 2009 Venza, all of them were over 60,000 pesos. Guess we need to shop it around better.

Well, it somehow depends of the value of your car, how much is your car worth?

That's sounds correct. My first year the insurance on the Santa e was 47,000 and the next year 39,000.

I believe DR insurance companies won't provide comprehensive cover for cars over a certain age.

What seems strange to me is that insurance is for the car, not the driver, so any idiot can drive my car, whatever their inexperience or bad record.

I just bought a 4-door Jeep Rubicon for my redhead. I got full coverage because she doesn't really see well and tends to hit a lot of things with the SUV's mirrors as she drives down the street. I got full coverage and it is $53,000 a year.

When I got my 2000 prado I was told you cannot get full coverage for that old a car. It was just past the cut off. 2001 car I could have gotten full coverage. So I got the third party liability and paid 2695 pesos for the year. That was last December and I have since traded up to a 2002 car and I simply transferred the coverage to the "new" car. This is with monumental.

Yes.

Cost varies with two things A) The value of your vehicle; B) Amount of coverage.

I am not sure if they offer payments as I pay mine in full when due.
What are the best companies for this?
Hard to say as I have not yet made a claim.
But quotation amounts can vary widely depending on the company.

I just received renewal quotes for my 2007 Toyota Corolla and they are:
500,000/1,000,000 pesos coverage including collision, glass, casa de conductor, etc.

Banreservas: 20,961;
Colonial: 23,958;
Mapfre BHD 36,628:
Sura: 38,083;
Universal 41,123

As you can see, there is a wide disparity between the high and low (double)

1,000,000/2,000,000 coverage as above:

Colonial 29,484;
Mapfre BHD 38,959;
Sura 39,127;
Universal 41,765

Do they actually pay a claim if filed or just take your money and leave you high and dry in an accident?

Fortunately or unfortunately, I have not found out.

Perhaps others can weigh in who have actually used some of these companies and can provide insight into the quality of their claim/payout processes.

Respectfully,

I have 2008 Honda CRV and I pay I think 36,000RD with Seguro Banreservas which full coverage and also includes Air Ambulance if you are in accident on the high way. Last year I had claim because someone throw rocks at my car and I had a lot scratches. They gave a rental car for 3 days and I only 650.00rd for the car insurance and 8,000.00RD to repaired the car which had a lot damage and needed part replace. My is insured for 850,000RD.

Just remember to get the "Casa de Conductor" option where ever you get your insurance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You will spend your time in a hotel room, and not a jail cell, if you get arrested.
They have traffic court judges there to hear your case.

I use Banco Progreso...... for get the amount for 2 cars.

Pay annually - never had to make a claim

I just paid today.... anniversary date for both my cars... and think this is a useful thread for many.

with Banco Progreso, which is from SURA

2005 Jeep Wrangler = $42,750/yr
2009 Suzuki XL-7 = 38,500/yr

w/ casa de conductor and 5,000 deductible

pretty good coverage -- 1,000,000 and 500,000 limits in varying categories

as to the casa de conductor,
I bought it even though I live in the sticks

I figure the only times they will really 'throw the book ' at you is in the big cities and why not be prepared >??:confused:
