it's not like the tree is guilty, you know. thousands of people pass it every day without crashing.

Of course not - but if it's located at a stretch of road that makes cars prone to skidding off in its direction, it's better if there is no tree there.

very true. he was going sideways when he wrecked, and there is a great likelihood that he would have ended up hitting an indentation in the surface and flipping a few times.
There is a lot of standing water on DR roads.

^Speed and hitting standing water=instant hydroplaning & loss of control. The faster you go, the more prone to hydroplaning, especially with performance tires that sacrifice water channeling for dry traction...

i don't know about america but in europe many roads are lined with trees. then there are lamp posts, electricity poles and a variety of other obstacles. you cannot remove everything. the goal is for people to adjust their driving to the conditions on the road. and i kinda think that it is better for a car to hit a tree than keep on rolling and bouncing on the road where it may hit other vehicles or people.

I agree.

Let's face it, we were all 22 once, and most of us did stupid things that could have ended very differently. When I was 22, I owned a red Firebird, and I was born with a lead foot.

This guy must have felt his life was magical, I can only imagine going from poverty to MLB salaries. I know I was invincible at 22, he must have felt it in spades. And the young girl with him must have felt soooooo lucky that he chose her.

On a separate note, I was surprised that none of the US news channels we've seen have even mentioned the accident/death

Oh sure AE, Fox news has reported it and CNN, MSN, ABC, etc. He had a lot of fans in the US
and they were stunned to hear of his death. Social media was swarming with texts and emails of disbelief.

Speeding cars that hit trees AND kill the occupants look just like the remains of this Camaro. Low speed hits do not demolish the car. He was flat out flying. Just look at the car. If this was in the real world we would know exactly how how fast from the computer. Being the DR we will never know the facts.

Body of Cardinals rookie Oscar Taveras taken from funeral home to D.R. coroner's office

In the U.S., St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Monday he was stunned by the death of 22-year-old outfielder and that his players were struggling with deep anguish after losing a young teammate.

"I was asked last night to give some words regarding the tragic death of Oscar Taveras, but I just simply couldn't," Matheny said. "To say this is a horrible loss of a life ended too soon would be an understatement."

Giants outfielder Juan Perez heard about Taveras' death during Game 5 of the World Series. He hit a two-run double in the eighth inning of San Francisco's 5-0 victory and dedicated the hit to his fallen countryman.

"He's a really close friend of mine," Perez said. "I know his family pretty good, I know his mom, his dad, his brothers, we were really close. It's a huge loss for all his family, his teammates and the people that care about him."

Taveras made his major league debut this year. He hit .239 with three homers and 22 RBIs in 80 games for the NL Central champions.

"I simply can't believe it," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said. "I first met Oscar when he was 16 years old and will forever remember him as a wonderful young man who was a gifted athlete with an infectious love for life who lived every day to the fullest."

Matheny said the team had forged deep ties and affection for Taveras.

"In my opinion, the word 'love' is the most misused, and misunderstood word in the English language. It is not popular for men to use this word, and even less popular for athletes," he said. "But, there is not a more accurate word for how a group of men share a deep and genuine concern for each other. We loved Oscar, and he loved us. That is what a team does, that is what a family does. You will be missed, Oscar."

Taveras was a teenager when he signed with St. Louis as an international free agent in 2008. Before this season, Taveras was ranked as the No. 3 overall prospect by MLB.com and Baseball America, and had a .321 average over six minor league seasons. He homered against the Giants' Yusmeiro Petit in his major league debut May 31. He also had a big solo drive in the seventh inning of Game 2 in the NL Championship Series against San Francisco.

"All of us throughout Major League Baseball are in mourning this evening," Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. "Oscar, a young member of the baseball family, was full of promise and at the dawn of a wonderful career in our game, evident in his game-tying home run against the Giants exactly two weeks ago."

I do hope that some of the members watch and read some of the tributes made about this young man.
His whole life should not be defined by his bad judgment in his final moments.
I would much prefer to learn about him as the person that he was. He should not be defined by a smashed up car and tree. That was not his life. That was his death.
May he and his girlfriend rest in eternal peace despite all the judgmental people here.

the fact that us judgemental people call it like it is does not mean we do not share your degree of sadness and regret over his passing.

Give it a freekin' break. You have said your piece. To you have to keep making the same point over and over again? We got your message loud and clear already.
