Yes, also Sun Village (this will won't sit well with the Elliot's) and Lifestyles.

Not sure how the Be-Live Carey (former SV) and Lifestyles will benefit from this, unless the RIU is full when some Carnival business needs rooms. They are about 5 miles away in Cofresi Bay.

From today's Sosua News:

Thursday afternoon, Aug. 11, the Minister of Tourism Francisco Javier Garcia, set up a meeting at the Hotel Be Live Gran Marien in Costa Dorada. At the meeting were present, Giora Israel, vice president of the cruise company Carnival Cruises, the mayors of Sos?a, Puerto Plata and Maim?n. Edy Martinez, president of CEI-RD (Center for Exports and Investment in the Dominican Republic). Bishop Julio C?sar Corniel Amaro opened the meeting with a prayer.

The vice president of the cruise company showed to those present a detailed plan for the construction of a cruise port near Puerto Plata. The company has already purchased a large piece of land in the bend of Maim?n. The company is willing to invest 60 to 70 million dollar to build the cruise ship terminal. The company owns 25 large cruise ships and since a long time they wish to add Puerto Plata to their route. But the port of Puerto Plata is too dangerous and not suitable for large cruise ships. The cruise terminal will surely create 800 direct jobs. But also the rest of Puerto Plata, Sos?a and Maim?n it will create additional income because the passengers will visit these sites and will use the bars, restaurants and souvenir shops. If the government cooperates with the provision of the necessary permits, the construction of the terminal can start mid-2012. The first cruise ships may then be expected by December 1, 2012.

So 12 months for permits and 6 months for construction. :bunny: The 12 months is probably correct.

This will be fun to watch and should be a boon for the entire North Coast. I wish them luck.

Carnival signs on for $65 million Dominican Republic cruise village

This item was written by Fran Golden, a cruise expert and Trip Coach for Budget Travel magazine. Golden is serving as Guest Editor of The Cruise Log while USA TODAY Cruise Editor Gene Sloan is away.

Carnival Corp. is turning its sights on the Dominican Republic. The cruise company confirmed it has signed a memorandum of understanding to finance a $65 million port facility and retail/restaurant/recreation complex geared towards cruise passengers just west of Puerto Plata on the country's north coast.

Carnival is partnering with the Rannik family - which has shipping operations in the DR - on the project, which includes a docking facility at Maimon Bay that will be able to accommodate two post-Panamax (over 1,000-feet) ships.

In addition to retail and recreation, the space will also include a transportation hub, Carnival said. The facility is expected to open in Fall 2013.

Carnival Corp. already has a long-term deal with the Dominican government to rent a small island, Catalina, about five miles off La Romana, which serves as a private island for its Costa Cruises (and where topless sunbathing is allowed on some quiet beaches).

The company did not say which ships or brands – which also include Carnival Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Cunard and Seabourn – might visit the new Puerto Plata facility.

Additional details will be announced at a later time, a spokeswoman said.

The new deal follows Carnival's pattern of investing in ports when it needs more places to put its growing fleet of ships. Carnival opened port facilities with retail complexes in Grand Turk in 2006; Cozumel, Mexico, in 2008; and $62 million Mahogany Bay in Roatan, Honduras.

Grand Turk was originally opened for Holland America ships but is now visited by seven brands and has become the third most popular of Carnival Corp.'s Caribbean ports after Nassau and Cozumel, according to Carnival officials. Facilities include the Caribbean's largest Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville bar.

From inside sources detailed that Carnival will be using the new port for the two new ships it contracted. Both ships will be the largest to date and most advanced of all the fleet.

They are the "Royal Princess" and the sister ship "Palm Princess:, both with a 140,000 gross tonnage to be delivered on 2013 and 2014 respectively...

CARNIVAL CORPORATION & PLC FINALIZES CONTRACTS FOR TWO NEW CRUISE SHIPS FOR ITS PRINCESS CRUISES BRAND
VESSELS TO ENTER SERVICE IN 2013 AND 2014

MIAMI (May 4, 2010) -- Princess Cruises, a unit of Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), today announced that contracts to build two 3,600-passenger ships have been finalized with Italy's Fincantieri shipyard.

The new ships -- which each will have an all-in cost of approximately 155,000 euros per lower berth -- are scheduled to enter service in spring 2013 and spring 2014. At an estimated 141,000 tons, the as-yet-unnamed ships will be the largest in the Princess Cruises fleet.
The ships' design will be evolutionary, in keeping with the themes of the line's newest vessels, but with some new features and innovations. For example, all outside cabins will feature balconies, bringing the percentage of balconies on the ships to 80 percent of all staterooms.
The company's signature Piazza -- the ship's central atrium featuring dining, entertainment and retail -- will be expanded, as will the popular Sanctuary, spa, and restaurants.

"We're pleased that in this challenging economic environment, the order for these new ships is a testament to the confidence in the growth potential of the Princess brand," said Alan Buckelew, president and CEO of Princess Cruises. "These new ships will include the features from our newest ships that have been so well received, and take them to the next level," he added.

Giuseppe Bono, chief executive officer of Fincantieri, said, "We are grateful to the Carnival Group for this further vote of confidence in Fincantieri. We are proud to have met the requirements of Princess Cruises, one of Carnival's most prestigious brands, with an innovative design both from a technical and architectural point of view."

Bono continued, "This is a highly important order for us, especially as it comes in a period of economic crisis. We succeeded in securing these orders with assistance and support of the Italian export credit companies, in particular SACE S.p.A."

Specific amenities and design elements for the new ships will be revealed over the coming months.
