......... but the problem is that the politicians made promises impossible to keep, that POP will fill with tourists, that it will revive the economy. heck, one politico went as far as to say that folks should borrow money in order to open new businesses. and looks like all this is not coming to fruition. some may say it's still better than nothing but it's not cutting it....

That my friend is a thread of it's own and will reach the several thousand reply mark. If you fell for the BS of a politico than the port did not do what some thought it would. If you, as in my case, never listened to a word out of a politico's mouth about the port than the port is a good thing. Can't blame Carnival for lying politicians.

I agree with you but if you ignore the "prices" alfiefan did paint a lovely picture of the mindset of the cruiser.

i am not sure that the cruise ship passenger is the demographic that wants to learn what Dominicans, or any other local populations, put in their shopping carts, where the kids go to school, if there are doctors in their villages, and home remedies for centipede bites. twenty minutes of Limbo Like Me sounds about right, then back to the ship.

I don't know if someone mentioned this and I am not about to go though 110 pages...

I know cruise ship has next to nothing to do with AI in PP, but did anybody has gone in to one? I heard many AIs up north are fixing up their places, is this true???

I had just came back from Riu Marengue and it looks like they are finally fixing up the place and town.
The room me and my friends had stayed had new paints, bathroom and TVs.
And food quality is slightly better then last time I went there couple of months ago.
And I had noticed less day pass had been given out.

I don't know how long the renovation is going to continue but I think it's win-win for resorts and northern part of the country.
New decent roads, resorts/stores will benefit from ones that wants to venture out from the bubble and visitor/locals going to AIs will benefit from slightly expensive but better quality of things too.

i just noticed the first review of POP city tour:
This was the first cruise to Amber Cove. They should have waited until the port was ready. Only a few stores open, This excursion was so bad I left and took a taxi back to the ship. Several people said the top 10 was good but I will never take another cruise back here. I am a platinum VIFP and it did no good to complain to customer service. To bad so sad.

this is a common problem with caribbean ports, which is the opening of the destination before it is ready. the same thing happened at Falmouth in Jamaica. i feel badly to hear that someone had such a negative response. please give us a link to the review page, if there is one.

Is there any stats on how many people went up the mountaiin by the Teleferico (the cable car that goes up the mountain), I would have thought that would be interesting to cruise passengers and something unique to PP... !?

The 'not ready for prime time' explains quite a lot....

How silly to start before you're ready.

Too bad, so sad....

Oh well, the next trip may be better............ fingers crossed.

Knowing the situation now, it's too early to criticize or to crow success.

The cake hasn't baked yet.

this notion is ridiculous. at 130 dollars carnival sells a helicopter tour of this dump of a town plus two hours lounging on VIP lifestyle beach with drinks and snacks. and that's one of their most expensive excursions...

The entire 4 day cruise is being sold starting at $339 This (Carnival Victory) isn't being marketed to the QE II crowd

first 6 months or so will be irrelevant, in many ways. partly because the place is still wrapping up and is not fully ready. partly because the local government only started any work in the area fairly recently so nothing is done properly. and partly because it is a new destination and more people than usual are leaving the ship just to be the first to do/see things.

when i was a young man in high school, a teacher used to remind us that only schoolchildren and fools criticise unfinished work.

On the other hand.....

I am reluctant to dub this a 'Work in Progress'.......

Somebody needs to keep their eye on the ball...... take a look at the goal line.

Finishing is a trait Dominicans seem to have trouble with.
