Such a great area , the Puerto Plata area in a geographical sense and I really hope that Carnival Cruise Lines does very well . During the season, cruise ships are docked in la Romana four days a week now and the shops in Altos de Chavon thrive on the business from the tourists. So do the various artisans that sell their produce in the Central Park . It is great for so many local people .

True. Jumbo is also packed (to the extent that when we know the bigger ships are coming, we avoid the store). I also see tourists, and crew, dinning, buying from street vendors, etc. I don't know how much business they do in the park, but I know they are busy in CdC.

In addition to all of this, we look forward to the boats coming as having the tourists around just adds a certain "vibe."

Yes I am sure of that but really most of the negative comments are just pie in the sky stuff ..proof of the pudding will be in the eating and I for one think that this area is amongst the best in the Caribbean

actually, pie in the sky is what happens when people predict eventualities that happen nowhere else. every caribbean island makes a little money from cruise ships, but nothing near what governments tell them. the Dominican Republic is not filled with people who know more than everyone else, so i see no reason why they will be able to do what none of the other countries have done, which is to make big money from cruise ships.

when you say that the DR is one of the best in the caribbean, i would like you to tell me what it has that nobody else has. since the topic is cruise ships, tell us what makes for a great cruise port, and what are the advantages of the DR in respect to the other islands. fire away.

The bad guys have been nicely asked and are going to be nice to the cruise ship people for one.

a politician from PRM thinks POP ain't ready for cruise ships: http://www.puertoplatadigital.com/verNoticia.aspx?Id=19689
it's mainly about crime, transit and unfinished renovations in the city.

as far as the excursions. i have seen the attractions offered. glad to see gregorio luperon museum included, it's a nice treat. but NC on the whole is not spectacular, sorry not sorry.

Both you and the politician should stop with the realism.

I am, of course, kidding.

Anybody know if there are any CURRENT Aerial photos of the completed port floating around anywhere?

this one looks current, from the state of the port as can be seen from the road:
