Best car in the world Toyota, number one in DR market and the only one resistant to do "Carro publico" works....

This one in the picture is a LE 1997 Camry, the car I'm currently using. I put US. $ 40. gasoline the day before Labor day in Myrtle beach SC and drove all the way to Raleigh NC, drove all week my baby to school did my weekly errands and to work....

The Camry has a 2,200 CC engine with an automatic transmission and the truck a 2,500 CC with a manual transmission, I don't understand why the big difference in gas consumption...

Both are 4 cylinders engine.

The 2.5 is a truck engine and builds more low end torque and that takes more fuel. The truck is also heavier, has more rolling resistance and had to push a lot more air.

That would account for the difference.

Well I can say marvelous about Dodge Neon this was my first car here in US. My wife bought this car with a lot of miles on it (who know) as the speedometer stop working at 145. K, a 1995 stick shift.... same week I arrived here she bought a 2003 with 78 K . Still driving the same one. The only problem we had with theses cars is that the 2003 blew up the timing belt and got tow intake and four exhaust valves dent at 96. K I fixed my self and the car is still running good.

Both Neon including a third one a 2000 I bought with a hot rod to fix it and make some money are pretty good on gas. between 26 and 36 mils. / Gls.

I highly recommend this car like a one of the best American Cars in its range!

I was blaming a lot about how bad quality theses cars have because I've never saw a car with a blown timing belt in before 100 K mils. is that I was used to drive Toyota and Honda in DR and a factory timing last for 150,000. mils. in theses vehicles.

But when you take a look at the manufacture specification in theses American cars they recommend timing belt to be replaced at 90,000. or less on 6 cylinders motors.

In some case at 60,000. mls. so take a look at your car manual...

Nunca se termina de aprender!

Hi all, I'm thinking of selling my yipeta here in Santo Domingo - 2001 Toyota Surf, 4x4, 3litre turbodiesel (a japan market 4Runner in diesel), originally right hand drive switched to left hand drive. Love it in the traffic but lost my job and need to sell. Does anyone have suggestions for price range I might ask? Thinking $300,000 +/-.

I am going to be in the punta Cana area for three months. Jan 12 - Apr 12, 2012. Is there some way I could rent an inexpensive motor scooter or even buy one and agree ahead of time to sell it back at the end of 3 months. It will only be used for local traveling around the punta Cana area.

DR1 has helped me many times (including purchasing property and getting teeth implants!)--now I ask for your expert counsel on buying a used car!
We need a RELIABLE 4 door sedan--NOT an suv-- to drive to/from SDQ and Las Terrenas--
Our friend in Las Terrenas can check out cars when he's in Sto Domingo on Saturdays for school--
Is a budget of $250,000 (pesos - ha!) realistic? Thank you very much!!

2003-4 Toyota Corollas seem to go for 400-475,000 pesos. How old a car is OK for you

Thanks, Bob, for this starting point-- I drive a 1998 Nissan Altima here in the US, so age is NOT a factor--:)
Wish we could afford the Corolla, but 250,000 is as high as we can go...

This information is exactly why DR1 is the most valuable resource for anyone visiting or living in the DR-- Thank you SO MUCH, JD! I will definitely get the "casa de conductor" option-- Are there any insurance companies you would recommend? (I will also do a "search" on this thread)
Thank you again!

JD,
I know this drags back to May, but I would like to ask why? Why wouldn't one want to? Too much hassle with aduana? Or what? I see on ebay 1998 Suzuki Grand Vitaras selling for in the $2000 range. A car of that vintage is fine for me while I am there, and am sure it would take care of me here.
Everyone I talk to says that I cannot import a car older than 5 years old, and a strange requirement enters into the conversation that I would have to have owned it in the USA for at least a year before shipping date, and one even said that by law it stays within aduana for 120 days. I raelize I am not paying you for legal advice, but am baffled as to why if I could do it I wouldn't wanna.
Thanks
Der Fish
Oh, you can import one, but it will be taxed at the rate as if it was new (ITIBIS and first registration), plus there will be an additional duty penalty.

By the time you pay the huge penalty you can buy a newer vehicle here for = or less $$$.

And a '98 Suzuki won't be considered a "classic."
