The plenary of the Chamber of Deputies returned on Tuesday, 4 May 2021, the Penal Code bill of the Dominican Republic to the Permanent Justice Committee. The Penal Code had passed a first reading. A second reading was pending prior to it being sent to the Senate for approval.
The bill was criticized for being soft on corruption. It instated a maximum sentence of three years in jail for administrative corruption. Likewise, the revised Penal Code removed the penalties for the crime of complicity of government officials in crime, the most common in the history of corruption accusation. The legislators also removed making political parties responsible for criminal acts.
