In another thread about the a British company leaving the DR because of extortion, the topic got onto the subject of Chavs visiting the DR. Having no idea what Chav meant I had to resort to the urban dictionary which draws the following verbal image:

1. chav

Picture this a young lad about 12 years of age and 4 ? feet high baseball cap at ninety degrees in a imitation addidas tracksuit, with trouser legs tucked into his socks (of course, is definitely the height of fashion). This lad is strutting around, fag in one hand jewellery al over the over, outside McDonalds acting as if he is 8 foot tall and built like a rugby player, when some poor unsuspecting adult (about 17/18) walks round the corner wanting to go to mcdonalds for his dinner glances at the young lad, the young lad jumps up in complete disgust and says ?Whats your problem? Wanna make sommin of it? Bling Bling? when the adult starts to walk towards the young lad, the young lad ****es himself and runs off to either his pregnant 14-year-old girlfriend or his brother in the army crying his eyes out.
My mate has become a chav what can i do? answer is shoot him before it is too late
buy chav mugs & shirts

The US equivalent would be white trash.
The word 'chav' is said to originate from the Romany (gipsy) word for child, and is related to 'chavo' and 'chaval' - Spanish slang for kid.

I love Google

It's like having the library at Alexandria, the British Museum and the Library of Congress at your fingertips.

Imagine if Karl Marx had had Google. He wouldn't have developed so many boils on his keister.

From Wiki:

Etymology:

The Oxford University Press has said that the word is "generally thought to come from Chatham girls",[4][5] but, according to etymologist Michael Quinion, the term probably has its origins in the Romani word "chavi", meaning "child"[5][6] (or "chavo", meaning "boy",[4] or "chavvy", meaning "youth"[7]).[8] This word may have entered the English language through the Geordie dialect word charva, meaning a rough child.[9] This is similar to the colloquial Spanish word chaval, meaning "kid" or "guy".[4][10] Unlike the Geordie variant, the term derived from Chatham can be applied loosely to every culture with a nasty, thieving element.[citation needed]

The derivative chavette has been used to refer to females.[11] The adjectives "chavish" and "chavtastic" apply to stuff designed for or suitable for use by Chavs.[12]

Many urban legends have sprung up around the etymology of the word. These include the backronym "Council Housed And Violent" or "Council House-Associated Vermin",[2] and the suggestion that pupils at Cheltenham Ladies' College and Cheltenham College used the word to describe the young men of the town ("Cheltenham Average").[13] Quinion writes that "we must treat supposed acronymic origins with the greatest suspicion; these examples are definitely recent after-the-event inventions as attempts to explain the word, though very widely known and believed."[8]

By 2005, media references to 'Chavs' had spread the word throughout Britain. The Chav's cultural equivalents are: in Ireland - "Skanger", Scotland - "Ned", East Anglia - "Yarco" [12], Eastern North America - Guido,[14], Central and South America - Mam?n, universal term - Fashion victim.

Teachers have this thought focused on a select few of the class not the entire group. ;) Trust me sometimes when you have to deal with some kids (and the parents) day after day the thought of them continuing their evaporating gene pool is enough to make you want to retire before you teach their kids. :glasses: :cheeky:

There's a similar phenomenon in the US but without a universally recognized name.

The private preparatory school kids will set fashion standards. Private schools are the schools that cater to the wealthy (with a liberal sprinkling of scholarships for some non wealthy students) and most have mostly boarding students. They prepare students for university.

Some kids from tougher neighborhoods copy these fashions and then their peers copy them without knowing where it all came from and the prep school kids go on to the next fashion and restart the cycle.

In a similar cycle Engineers design products.

Consumers go into debt to buy the products.
