Right Chris, definitely. We should have been younger when we got it. I honestly feel so much older.

One poster said he felt 20 years older and so do I. I was thinking that WOW, now I am going to have to get someone to come in every day, or live in ... I pictured myself going around in a walker... yikes.

It does seem an odd course for an illness. Usually you feel better and keep on feeling better. I guess this one is more like malaria, when you feel better and then have attacks. I hope it will not go on for a life time.

But to see that it has only been 20 days when I was really sure that it had been at least 40, that shows me how bad it has been. I have lost track of time.

And just the daily stuff is really hard. Taking the shower. Getting dressed.

A young man died, who had presented symptoms of chikungunya

In July the deaths of three people were reported with similar symptoms.

SANTIAGO. A young man who had symptoms similar to those of Chikungunya died yesterday at the Regional Hospital Universitario Jos? Mar?a Cabral y B?ez of this city, as reported by his relatives.

This is Jos? Ram?n Ortiz Camacho, 19-year-old, who was referred to health center from Cotu? public hospital, where he remained hospitalized for eight days.

The body of Jos? Ram?n will be buried in the afternoon on Friday in the municipal cemetery of the town of Juan S?nchez Ram?rez province, where he was born.

His relatives told DL that being admitted to the hospital in Cotu? doctors indicated the medications used to treat those suffering from viral fever. "The doctor who examined him told us it was chikungunya that he had, but here they have told us to wait for the autopsy results." Melvin de la Cruz, the victim's cousin said.

This case, along with four other deaths that have occurred in people with symptoms of the disease were handled with secrecy from the Ministry of Public Health. Dl has tried to establish contacts with local officials to confirm the information, but was unsuccessful.

During the recently concluded month of July, three deaths were reported, three people who suffered similar symptoms like viral fever, which is transmitted to people through the bite of the Aedes aegypti and Aedes Albopictus mosquitoes who are the transporters.

I got Chikungunya in mid April! I went to the lab and was tested to be sure this is what it is. It is almost 4 months later and I am still suffering sever pain in hands, wrists, feet, ankles and knees. The other symptoms have come back 3 times and when I have another episode the joint pain escalates. It is not fun. I am also still exhausted and mild exercise helps a bit.

Specialists have no idea what to do for the arthritis. Serious research on the internet suggests that while this feels like arthritis it does not act like arthritis. Most of the drugs we tried did not work, waste of money. We are now trying antiviral drugs to see if they will help.

they are also saying that blood to blood transmission is possible..

:CHIKV is transmitted via the bite of an infected mosquito of the Aedes spp., predominantly Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus. Nonhuman and human primates are likely the main reservoirs of the virus, and anthroponotic (human-to-vector-to-human) transmission occurs during outbreaks of the disease. Bloodborne transmission is possible; cases have been documented among laboratory personnel handling infected blood and a health care worker drawing blood from an infected patient.

Chikungunya cases declining in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Cases of chikungunya fever whose epidemic began February are already declining in the Dominican Republic with a gradual reduction expected until reaching a minimum across the country, since it doesn’t repeat and leaves a permanent immunity.

Public Health Ministry epidemiology director Raquel Pimentel said surveys found that as high as 60 percent of Greater Santo Domingo’s population reported having had symptoms of the virus.

Quoted by listin.com.do, the official said 30 percent of the population had no symptoms of the disease, but had contact with the virus, so they’ve already developed immunity. "There’re some who’ve said the virus hadn’t affected them and others that it did, but without symptoms, because studies conducted show that it’s so, while now we have to do research to find out who has remained virgin."

She said numerous cases of the disease have been currently reportedly, mostly the northern Cibao region, though the trend is a significant fall since three weeks ago, especially in places where it started. "We feel that we’ll see a significant change in a couple of weeks."

I was in the DR the month of June, came back to Texas June 28. Woke up June 30 with a 'frozen' right hand...I thought I was just freaking myself out and somehow this was not real. By the evening, I knew it WAS REAL. My fever shot up to 102, rash all over my body, and I could not walk as my entire body hurt so bad. When I stood up it felt like the bones in my feet were crunching beneath me!!! I was confined to the bed for about 8 days. Well, here we are more than a month later, and I am still not 'right.' My right hand, neck, and feet/ankles are still giving me heck. I rotate aleve and tylenol and that seems to help. I am curious how long most people are continuing with arthritis like symptoms?? The rash came back 2 weeks ago, it was different.. first one looked similiar to chicken pox, 2nd time it was more like a bright red rash all over my body. I am 33 years old and I feel like I am 90. This has got to get better soon or I'm gonna go CRAZY!!!!!!!!

My wife, Dominicana, had pain start in her feet and hands, then head and neck, the next day she had a bright red rash over her whole torso, and her face turned red as well, but no rash. She did two days of Tylenol an then switched to Advil but after listening to what has worked for may others locally she is now back on Tylenol plus a strong multi-B vitamin and an anti-allergy pill.
I have arthritis already and today I had no strength in my left hand and sore feet. Pain in neck as I write this. Hope I'm just suffering my normal arthritis pain.

I seriously doubt they can come up with an accurate number of those that were infected with CHIKV, but showed no symptoms without a proper IgG rapid test.

You're right. Good point.

The true numbers will probably forever be a mystery. I guess that they are comparing the number of sick that they knew... with the number of sick that they know now.
