Coraasan provides the water here in Sajoma. Pumped out of a local river when the water is clear enough. The rains are messing with that. I don't think Coraasan treats the water with chlorine. Occasionally I will add some based on the amount I see we've gotten in the cistern and a chart I have. Is that worth it? Chlorine is a pretty volatile chemical and the surface area of the cistern is a pretty large. Just wondered what others do and if I'm wasting my time.

Don’t know where I found this direction but I add chloro to our cistern once a month. Amount to add depends on size of cistern. you also need to drain and clean the cistern every year or so. Search for”care of a cistern” to get better information. Bottom line, your cistern needs care.

Same, chlorine puck--- the same kind as the pool--- in the cistern, maybe once a month.
As for chlorine being volatile, in my experience it's the sun that breaks down the chlorine in the water.
The underground cistern is huuuge, maybe twice the volume of the pool (??) and it gets 1 or 2 chlorine pucks a month, and still smells faintly of chlorine.
The pool probably gets 8+ pucks a month + chloro granulado.

We buy the chlorine solid pucks and put them into a plastic floating device in both our cistern and our tinaco. Doing it for many years.
Same. In the cistern I use the plastic floating device, but put the chlorine in a small plastic jar and cut one slit in the jar. The chlorine drips out very slowly, which extends the life of the chlorine and greatly reduces the smell
