The city government of the capital city sent crews on Wednesday, 3 July 2024, in the morning to clear debris and plastics that damages the iconic Fray Antonio de Montesinos Monument on the eastern side of the Malecon. The monument is located right on the Caribbean coast and was closed for the cleanup.

The Ayuntamiento del Distrito Nacional reported the cleanup effort removed more than 35 tons of waste, predominantly plastic, by mid-morning of the day following the passing of Hurricane Beryl. Hurricane Beryl passed at more than 300 kms from the coast, but its wide-reaching waves brought lots of garbage. The city government reported nine dump trucks were used to remove the debris and garbage.

Tropical storm one day, two days later cleaned up.

Never expected to see that, but I'm not surprised.
The trash comes down from the river Ozama, and comes up after a heavy rain or storm. Will see more after all the rain today

Whatever happened to the plastic eating boat on the Ozama? I think the vessel was from Europe. Did that help clean up the river?

I would like to know also. That machine has cleaned up rivers around the world. It might have met its match. LOL

More than a few influencers from other countries have come here to pose with the machine and say they are involved in its operation.

I know it's had some problems but it hasn't been in the news lately.

I just checked Sr. Google. The name is the Interceptor IV and there's nothing new on it for the last couple of years. I do wish there was more but until the mindset here about trash changes drastically, it's just like treading water.

Do a search for it on Google Earth and it appears to have the river pretty clear at the moment. No telling the date of the satellite photo though.
But in Earth they appear to have it anchored North of the Puente del 17 with a boom crossing the river to catch debris.

It’s young dutch inventor Boyan Slat who started Ocean Cleanup. They have had hard times to get things working but now they are expanding and developing. There is a big cleanup project in the Pacific.

35 tons is mind boggling!
This was really mine blowing. Little further down from Fray Antonio is another spot where trash washes up. Different organizations; government and private used to come out every Saturday morning and do a clean up. Maybe the gave up also. Look at how the force of the waves has turned the bottom step upside down. Also people live in the reefs. caves

Yes this is along the Malecon. Its across the street from my house. The owner of the house told me when he was a boy, he and his brothers would play on this beach as a kid. He as 90 yrs old when I bought the house. It was very moving listening to him telling his story of how he would fall asleep out front. It reminded me of the stories my mother would tell about leaving you doors and window open in the summer and no one was worried. A year ago one of his nieces came by to visit a neighbor and stoped by my house to tell me taking for keeping the house maintained That really made me feel good.
