I have some folks staying with us and we got them some claro SiM cards, so DR numbers. For use here in the DR.

They are heading back to Europe next week, but stopping off in Miami for a few days.
During a conversation it came up that in order to Uber around Miami ( they spent a few days there before arriving in the DR ) they had to get an eSIM thingy, and the cheapest option was over 20$.

So I went through the claro internet menu ( *112# ) and noticed that they have an option for paquete internet roaming, and then 3 options, 1 of which is " america +caribe 1 ".

So 2 questions :

I am guessing they need the above option vs the regular DR internet paquete, right ?

And claro website says to " activate roaming " by typing *200 in the phone. Which does bugger all.

Anybody used a DR claro SIM card in the US recently and can confirm it works ?

Thanks

My experience is not recent, so I waited to see if anyone else had input, I had a prepaid Claro SIM several years ago and it did not work in the US. I then found that a postpaid Claro SIM allowed for roaming, but that too did not work very well where I was when in the US...spotty coverage, I suggest you go to a Claro office and ask if indeed there is a roaming possibility with your prepaid SIMS

I think Q # 1 is yes…
I have Claro here, use paquetes (no plan), I investigated your Q’s, claro told me it’s much cheaper to buy a SIM card in US instead of using my claro chip, because Claro’s long distance roaming (the paquete option) is very expensive. Last year I went to a cricket store in TX and got chip, activation and month talk and text & 3 gigs data for $60 usd total. No senior discount )^:

SIM in the US would be my suggestion, but my ALTICE plan works well enough on short trips and everyone uses WhatsApp or I can use Google Voice.

Claro let you use the roaming with your data plan for 3 months then stop the service, to reactivate the service need to comeback to DR and after that you get another 3 months of roaming with your plan.
