I don't see how it's much different than dog fights. I don't see how any two animals fighting and killing each other is considered a "sport" and entertaining to watch. We're back to the Roman Coliseum days as a culture!
I don't even like boxing, wrestling, or MMA. I just don't understand why people have a blood lust like that.

I have never understood the attraction of cockfighting. I've seen videos of it but don't understand what's so exciting about watching tow birds trying to kill each other(?).
The same as in any sport. To a degree who will win is up to chance. People will support one or the other, but none does it to lose. The road taken to the result is also interesting. As said before, put two roosters in the same place snd unless they are domesticated, one will fight the other one msny times to the death. It’s the right to mate with all the chickens (call it polygamy if you want, tgat’s how things are in the rooster world.) Winner takes all.

Modern society is based much of Roman (and Greek) inventions at the time they were empires. From aqueducts to coliseums, how much of democracy works, city planning, even having running water (aqueducts) and more.

The Renaissance is basically applying once again many of the Roman emphasis to city building and architectural design. The Neoclassical architecture which is seen as a type of grand architecture that a great city must have to create a sense of urban grandiosity is based on what was used by the Romans and the Greeks. Even the usage of cupolas is a Roman invention.

A sign of cultural refinement, advanced civilization, something to aspire to.

Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean it’s necessarily wrong. It simply means thag you don’t like it as I don’t like mint tasting ice cream and that’s that. No one is obligated to go to a cockfighting ring and watch a match in the same way no one is forced to go into a gentlemen’s club and see women in skimpy clothes, bikinis or less.

So we should bring back gladiator fights, crucifying and slavery as it is a sign of cultural refinement and historically correct. Better put two humans in the ring to fight to death because that is more in our nature than it is for roosters.

While cockfighting certainly is not for everyone, bringing slavery into the discussion is comical. Cockfighting rings are in almost every neighborhood on the island. I have seen them in the same block as churches. Talk of banning the sport would be political suicide for anyone running for office, especially on the local level. There are certainly more pressing political issues than chickens fighting, and the loser being grilled and served with rice and beans.

To answer the OP's question there is a cock fighting ring in La Ceiba which is very close to Uvero Alto. Just go straight at the intersection by the gas station, follow that road to the T and turn right. Go a mile or so and its on the left hand side in La Ceiba. It is quite pricy as there are not many in the area.
If you drive to Miches they have one and there was a few smaller venues along the way as well.
Have fun and enjoy part of the DR culture without any guilt from the do gooders that should just leave the island or go back and change their country of origin.

Even in Spain they tried to make it illegal on a nationwide scale and everywhere but in parts of Andalusia and the Canary Islands it’s illegal. Like the Puerto Ricans, those from the south and islands turn a blind eye and deaf ears to Madrid’s attempt in destroying cockfighting. Guess from what parts of Spain did cockfighting reached the DR (and PR, Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, etc) in colonial times?

The 2 regions of Southern Spain: 😎
Madrid: 😤

Puerto Rico: 😎
Washington DC: 😤

Taking away cockfighting in the DR is akin to taking away rum. See how fast there is a new revolution. lol

The Haitians tried to ban it during the Haitian occupation (not some animal loving act, nut Dominicans endulged a little too much in that the gambling it includes for the taste of the Haitian government) and see how effective that went. Now cockfighting is widespread in the DR and in Haiti.

This reminds me of my favorite meal I would make in the campo when my landlord came home from an afternoon at the gallera with a couple losers!

You totally misunderstood what I said. I didn't once moralize the issue. I never said it was right or wrong. I simply said that I don't understand how cockfighting in any way is considered a sport nor do I see anything entertaining about watching two animals killing each other. It honestly leaves me completely mystified. If you enjoy that, go ahead and continue to watch it. I won't go watch one because I don't see anything entertaining about it at all.

I like to arrive early and watch the owners sharpen the spurs. They sharpen the spurs to a scalpels edge. These birds are beautiful and cared for like a chosen son. I also like to sit close to the action. I don't mind getting feathers and blood on my shirt, especially if I win.

I like to get a little tobacco on a hot weekend day, sit out in the shade with a cold one, spit some of that tobacco on the bird, get it ready for the big day!

I'm planning on going to a cockfight at Club Galhí Club in La Ceiba del Salado, maybe next weekend. It's about 30-40 minutes away from my hotel.

Any thoughts on this particular club? What would be the approximate price of an entry ticket?

The event begins at 6pm. Is it worth getting there earlier?

Any venue is good. Entry is dirt cheap. Howevwr, bring a few thousand pesos to place some bets. It makes the experience better.
