Isn't Semana Santa a Holy week in which you should be on your knees praying, going to church and abstaining from the evils of alcohol???

Not in DR you say? :cross-eye

Be Careful ...

I will be sPending it in Sosua, but if I was smart I would stay in my hoiuse ... all I have to say is if there are any ladies who will be in Cabarete or Sosua, use high caution and watch your drinks .. last year BIG PROBLEM with the date raPe drug!!! And its not fun waking uP in the am with a smashing head ache and Pain all over your body, not remembering a damn thing from the night before!!!

Other than that Samana Santa can be a blast!!!!!!

When I was in the DR, it was a feista most of the year,
I would get a few cases of Rum and hand out a free bottle to people every now and then.

I just moved here Santo Domingo so am looking forward to the Santa time here in town - any good places I should go? (am male but naturally that could STILL make me a date rape drug target! ). Cheers!

Call me a misanthrope, but...

Semana Santa is a good time to stay put and enjoy Santo Domingo. Suddenly the city becomes manageable - hardly any traffic, no crowds...

There is no way I am putting my life on the line and taking to the roads that weekend, only to find noise, crowds and litter at the other end.

The only downside is that some places in the city close down for Semana Santa. Shame, because that's when I would choose to visit exhibitions, museums and art galleries - I can't seem to fit that sort of thing in usually.

Based on previous years experience, both living here and visiting here, I will lay low over Semana Santa.

The roads are a nighmare, the beaches are crowded, the bars are full of drunk and disorderly crowds..... not really too much fun!!!!

I will stay close to home and party with friends and neighbours.

Amen Chiri and Planner...you can party any time you like but this is a great week to chill in Santo Domingo...it was a ghost town last year...I loved it...I think I went to the beach for one day but otherwise just relaxed here...the cops and volunteers and military will be out in full force...accidents and incidents will be everywhere...not worth the hassle

I agree!!! The number of accidents on the roads and at the beaches is absolutely amazing! Hardly worth the risk for a good party. Hell you can find those here anytime....

Semana Santa is one of DR's biggest party holiday.
Most dominicans celebrate by going to the beaches.

They pay respect to the Lord by not eating meat on Friday and they enjoy the famous "Habichuela con Dulce" (Sweet Beans).

It is one of the holidays that is responsible for the most accidents deaths by drownings and automobil accidents.

As a friend of mine use to say: do you want to go camping in the corner of 27 de Feb and Churchill? ;)

I love Santo Domingo during Semana Santa, sometimes I wish people wouldn't find their way back.

is this a one-day holiday, or a week long celebration, when is the date(s), and is it the same time every year?

Semana Santa is Easter. I think the literal translation is "Holy Week".
