Senate president Ricardo de los Santos, who also heads the National Assembly to Revise the Constitution, confirmed the Monday, 7 October 2024 gathering to begin the constitutional reform process.
The majority of Congress is made up of the legislators representing the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM). The legislators approved the bill that declares the need for constitutional reform and mandates the National Assembly to convene within 15 days.
Both deputies and senators form National Assembly and are responsible to debate each proposed amendment presented by the President. The legislators also have the right to add new amendments.
If all amendments are approved, the same assembly has the authority to proclaim the new Constitution. The President of the Republic does not have the right to veto what the legislators approve.
