The parents here are praying the schools open.

The kids are in the starting blocks and ready to go back

How's that free internet and free laptop program working.

How many public schools actually have anything working in that regard ?

Distance learning is proving to be hard to pull off in other countries. I think it is going to a ineffective disaster in this country for all the reason already discussed. Some Parents want their kids out of the house and back into school provided daycare with meals provided. The kids are looking for a much needed change of pace to deal with the boredom of being away from class.

None of these things has anything to do with keeping people healthy so it is inevitable that when the schools reopen people in those schools will begin to get sick and will become potential spreaders to people outside the schools. Distance and masks and hand washing is important for students and the general population. There is just no getting away from the basic preventative measures except by disregarding them.

Bob, school is opening soon. Is your wife's school opening up with no restrictions?
We have no choice in the matter. There is a difference between restrictions based on the evidence and using common sense than draconian restrictions based on fear or for overcontrol purposes. Clearly different people have different opinions on this, some ill formed or uninformed. Children have a approximately 45% less chance of getting the virus, and children are easily trained to wash their hands, and wear their little masks. In June the government allowed us to bring children in for assessment for grade advancement. We brought children in small groups, temperature check, hands washed, masks, social distancing and neither parents or children had difficulty following protocol. We have good cleaners, and enough space to social distance, …etc. , however the government says virtual classrooms or online teaching only, and teachers must be be at the schools, not teaching from their homes. We have Wi-Fi throughout the school already. The biggest issue is with the children 4-6 years old. Virtual learning will be very difficult to do with this age group, almost impossible to do it effectively. Hopefully the positive rate comes down to under ten percent and the ministry will allow limited in class teaching. Many, many parents are waiting for this.

Some parents that I have spoken to about their kids retuning to school are still on the fence taking a wait and see attitude. As we have seen in other countries, the schools open up, kids pack in and then the schools have to close due to the spread of the infection. I expect most parents are expecting a similar scenario to play out here in the DR. You just can't put that many bodies into a confined indoor space and not expect transmission. Especially with kids who will not always not fiddle with their masks or wash their hands after touching some else's pencil. Schools just do not have the space to separate kids adequately in the classroom. If the parents do not want the virus coming home, most likely they will not send their kid(s) to class. At least until the schools demonstrate that they can control the spread of the virus between students and teachers, which I think will be unlikely.
We have the space, and have already determined the number of children per class and in the school at one time, different recess times, different, entry and exit times, use of two exits, outdoor teaching, teaching in our larger rooms, open windows...etc. There are solutions to every problem. We also have a disinfectant atomizer sprayer....etc. no touch digital thermometers. However we have no idea or control of what children do off school grounds. I went for a walk yesterday at 4 pm and saw several groups of children, some whom I knew, in groups as large as 15 , without masks.

Ignoring the curfew even at 9 PM. It was just a matter of time before the curfew fell apart:

Everyone is entitled to have an opinion even if that opinion is wrong.

And this is the problem with group think. You think you can pick a stance and try to shame others into thinking it is right ?
That is what is wrong
I think more people think it is time to reopen and eliminate curfews than don't.
Should we take a poll ?

You could ask NALs to run a poll here on DR1. Should at night curfews to control the spread of CV19 be completely eliminated In the DR?

This is not about masks and curfews working, because they were much more strict before, but the disease becoming less contagious, less lethal and the most compromised having been those in the high early numbers.

And a higher number of healthy people now being tested. Maybe only sick people were tested in the early days. Anyway PCR testing has nothing to do with contagious people but those who developed anti-bodies.

The main thing (and best news) is hospitalized Covid patients are down to 15 % of hospital capacity.
Now hospitals can get back to treating bigger killers - heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Today's report shows an increase in confirmed cases, including 90 in Espaillat (Moca).

This could reflect that there were days when relatively less tests were carried out, but it could also reflect the effects of the added mobility of people.
Deputy Minister Ivelisse Acosta has said the government is keeping close tabs on the situation and could reverse the curfew and enforce more stringent restrictions if they perceive the disease could pick up pace of spreading again.

Will have to see the effects of Mercedes Day long weekend in the next week or so.

As I understand it, the current testing is to determine where in the country the cases are.

As they move from district to district, the case loads might change...up or down

Do the regulations cover the pre-school kids age 3-6? Classes that are limited to 10 kids in an outdoor setting under a roof.

Can any member of the community in Santiago proper, or it's surrounding areas advise what they did with all the mass graves that were being prepared seven months ago?
