Milaidy/Mayleidy and other derivatives of "My Lady" are fairly popular in the DR, Cuba and PR, I suppose because "My lady/ Milady" was what the servants called their mistress back in the colonial period. The connection with English seems to be lost on a lot of people who think of it as just another name, like Gladys.

Belkis (Belkys and other spellings) was allegedly the name of the Queen of Sheba.

I know a girl named Candyleidy (Sounds like Candy Lady).
In elementary school my best friend was named Leidy. This is a name that is still popular. I used to be upset for not having a "cool" name, but later I realized that I had actually been lucky.

I could have been a Yenifer, a Estefani, a Smelly, or even worse, a ****leidy.
So what's behind those asterisks?

I suspect some four-letter English word that the posting program has been instructed to flag. The p word, the c word and the f word come to mind, but none seems all that logical as a name.

I know - it doesn't match any of the words that are usually blanked out. I met an Arsely once, but British English words don't get zapped.

They mostly did not. But the British did have plantations in the Caribbean, particularly Jamaica, and there was a lot of transference of culture. It is pretty clear that the expression Milady/ My Lady was clearly from English. One does not run across the name Milady, Miladis, Miladys and such in Spain or Mexico or Argentina. English words have a way of creeping into Spanish because some people think they sound more elegant. In several countries, the elementary school teacher is called "La Miss". Like Milady, Gladys is not a traditional Spanish name, and it seems somewhat common in the DR and other Caribbean countries,

I have noticed that a very common origin of names seems to be from telenovelas.

Becky is an English nickname for Rebecca, which is a Biblical name.

I remember meeting a Leidy in Peru. At the time I thought she was too old to have been named after Leidid?.

Many are named due to a lack of spelling knowledge and combining names. They are too stupid to realize that there is a certain amount of self fulfilling prophesy in a name. Just look at some of the names chosen by our DR1 members, before they even write their first post you can see deep physiological issues.
