I think this is the largest park in a poor area of the city (Cristo Rey, not the DR1er) that has been created by the government. President Luis Abinader and SD Mayor Carolina Mejía attended the event.

Another amphitheater. At least people can't say DR amphitheaters are for in rich and tourist areas only. I wonder if this one will get much use.

gentrification of this area is impossible.
This area is just the icing on the cake and I suspect it won't be used for its intended purpose. I hope I'm wrong, but in any case, The "cake" is the covered wastewater disposal duct that was built and installed below it.

This govt. has undertaken quite a few projects that under normal circumstances wouldn't get the attention of voters. It's a pretty nifty
idea to combine the "unseen" things with "seen" things.

Before it was a dirty full-of-trash and debris unsanitary canal, now you have this. Big difference.

Most people drive past this when going to the national zoo. I saw them working on this earlier this year. Prior to this it was a place where so much garbage was dumped. It really looks like a favela but it looks so much better now. I just hope it stays this way and more poorer areas get the same type of attention...then it is up to them if they want to maintain their area and prevent the dumping of garbage and creating new drug spots. Progress in the poorer areas is so important for the development of the country as so much attention is given to the city and the tourist areas as the poorer areas are home to the workforce, the backbone to the country. Better living conditions create a healthier and happier life, maintaining it however is a different story.

Next is Arroyo Gurabo, one of the worst canals in the city.

No others have attempted to do what is being done now.

A little known fact of the zoo is that originally it was not going to be where it's now next to the Isabela River. The original place was suppose to be where now is Los Ríos neighborhood, across the street from the botanical gardens.

I'm anxious to discover how Cristo Park stood up to the test this past weekend with the heavy rains. I haven't heard anything bad yet on the news, so I'm hoping all went well.

the government should make it mandatory in all schools here that all young kids are taught respect for themselves and respect for the land and discarding your trash properly because it's evidence that parents are doing a terrible job

I'm really interested in seeing photos of Cristo Park as it was before. Can you post what you have? I think you posted a photo but I can't open it

This is a short section of it. The entire canal was overflowing with trash.

Thanks. I drove through there a few days ago and it all looks really pretty now, definitely somewhere I want to show visitors to Santo Domingo. It was alive with activity, lots of sports being played, and the way they have painted the buildings makes it look really cute. I was always told that Cristo Rey was a no-go area.

It’s ironic. King Christ a no-go area. Why? The devil took over King Christ? Bad devil…

It used to be so rough that even the sun didn't want to come out on its own. Probably still reasonably rough at night but the park definitely helps.
