I visited Sosua beach yesterday afternoon. I don't think I've ever seen it so busy. All bars and restaurants open, it seemed!
I wouldn't go as far as "never seen it that busy" but it was good to see so many people. The problem is that the rest of town was completely dead.
Once again another inconsistency with how things are addressed, make every attempt to put local restaurants and bars out of business in Sosua but let the beach operate as usual. Don't get me wrong I want ALL businesses open and back to normal.

Dont they have "police" to reduce crime?
They're part of the problem.
Maybe the reduction of hours for them is a great idea if the new admin is serious about stopping crime.
No,,this is just an excuse for them to extort more propina from the gringos.. It happened to me outside my condo exactly at curfew

Las Terrenas
Starting December 31:

Monday - Friday curfew will be 5 pm to 5 am
Saturday and Sunday 12 noon to 5 am

This will continue until January 10

Does ANYONE know if this curfew will be extended past the 10th of January?

Weekend Saturday and Sunday 12noon shutdown is really drastic, IMO.

The Senate just approved another extension of 45 days for the SOE, so I wouldn't be surprised. The 5 pm doesn't affect me, but I'm probably in the minority.

The 2 hour transit time makes it bearable for me. Also it keeps the stores open till 5 and allows construction workers time to get home. They just need to stop this stupid weekend stuff.

Problem is the "2 hr transit" time is a grey area.
If they see you walking after 5pm they will harass and
possibly arrest you for violating curfew. It's already
happened to people I know. Many people living here,
including myself, don't own (by choice) a vehicle.

Then there are those who may need to take more than
one carrito to reach there destination. What happens if
you are stuck waiting on the second one to pass by and
the PN decide you are in violation?

Curfew needs to go and people need to have the freedom
to move without the constant threat of arrest.

Understand and agree.

Cabarete
Just got back from a day on the beach in Sosua. It was packed with people eating and drinking at the bars and restaurants. The police drove by frequently, but didn't bother anybody. On the way there, the billiards parlor across from Super Pola was open and lots of people inside drinking. None of the bars and restaurants on the main stretch of Pedro Clisante were open, but we stopped at a colmado on Pedro Clisane not far from banco danta Cruz well after 5pm and bought some beer. The taxi driver told us it was open 24 hours. Several other colmados were still open. Lots of people still out on the street.

A lot of traffic on the road after 5pm. Stopped at Scotia bank in Cabarete around 5:30pm. A lot of people on the street and traffic was heavy going through Cabarete at that hour. I think the police are getting tired of enforcing the curfew - at least in Sosua and Cabarete.

They cannot arrest you for walking. Transit Law considers walking part of transit. Those in the know of laws can not be arrested. If you are, just talk to fiscal or judge.

You can transit between 7 and 9 PM.

Ley 63-17, Art. 5, Numeral 30
Peatón: persona que transita a pie en la vía pública.

Pedestrian: person that transits on foot on public road

You are transiting on foot. But you are transiting. Know the law and have the upper hand. Maybe walk with the copy of the transit law on you.

but no thanks. Let a group of these Muppets catch
you on a main thoroughfare here in Santiago after 5pm
and you will have problems. The Ley(s) don't mean squat.

I carry my Press credentials with me at all times

I also have youtube live and twitch stream ready to roll.

You know what's best to say? For YOUR protection and mine, this encounter will be recorded live to the cloud... Stressing out again (to them), it's especially for your protection and mine, and should any question arise in the future... What happens from then on, it's recorded on the clouds forever, even if the phone is in "accident".
