Curfew to continue; Presidency requests 45 more days of the National State of Emergency

The Abinader administration announced it has requested an extension of the National State of Emergency for another 45 days. The Abinader administration has requested six states of emergency extensions in its nine months of government since 16 August 2020.

The spread of the disease had been declining after a spike over the Christmas holiday. Yet, the nationwide positivity rate has increased to 12.18% as of the 15 May 2021 Covid-19 bulletin, with most cases concentrated in Greater Santo Domingo. Active cases are up since last week, reflecting the greater mobility.

The announcement of the extension of the restrictive Covid-19 measures comes when almost everything is practically back to normal, except schools that only in April 2021 have restored in-person learning. I'm seeing more and more people inside businesses without masks despite signage indicating that a mask is required to enter. Even the article states that "almost everything is back to normal." Why extend the S.O.E., the curfew as well as the other protocols if no one is enforcing them including the guy spritzing your hands when you enter a store without a mask? Numbers of infected is going to climb higher I'm afraid. Heaven help us if a potent variant arrives and begins to circulate.
