As editor of DR1, here is a first short reading into the outcome of the 5 July 2020 elections.

Dominicans can feel good about themselves. People were patient and democracy talked.

There will be new government come 16 August. The elections went well. The announced electoral sabotage did not happen. Dominicans voted for a big change in government. The PRM won the Presidency and also both houses in Congress. The party will now be in the comfortable shoes the PLD enjoyed for years.

People say this is not good for democracy. Leonel Fernández’s best government, from 1996-2000 was when he had strong opposition in Congress.

But, given the scenario of the Covid-19 pandemic, the PRM big win could work out better for the Dominican Republic. The new government will be in the controlling seat. The next four years is a time in the country’s political history when the...

Lets hope that this version of PRD/PRM is not as Kleptomaniac as they were under Hippolito. Yes it would have been better if opposition controlled at least one level of government.
