R.I.P Charley

I was hit by a moto concho as I exited a colmado in LT. As I exited the colmado and stepped onto the sidewalk, BAM!
Due to a traffic jam a moto concho hopped onto the sidewalk and hit me as I exited . I was not hurt badly by sheer luck.
As others have said, keep your wits about you and your head on a swivel.

Like I say time and time again, there is no such thing as "Right of Way" in this country.

Thinking it exists and works to your benefit is a very quick way for something bad to happen to you.
It all boils down to respect. Respect for laws, other's safety, common courtesy and life. They won't even wear helmets - thumbing their noses and evading Digisett road checks.

85% of Dominicans loose respect for all of the above whenever they start any motor.

Now imagine them in EVs with no sound and able to accelerate 0 to 60 in 3 seconds. It would be a disaster.

The only way they will get respect is with educated traffic patrols issuing tickets and seizing any vehicle without papers or unlicensed drivers operating them.

By my count this is the fourth tourist “pedestrian” in two months that has been injured or killed on the North Coast. Dominican’s have no civility and no remorse when it comes to operating a motor vehicle. Try to cross a busy street, no one slows down or stops to let you pass. If anything they speed up. It’s becoming increasingly dangerous to live here.

I just can't agree with that. Maybe because I'm an old fart and look every part of it, but I always have people here in BC, the capital, and other locations stop or slow down when I'm crossing the street. Now, do I walk out into traffic and expect them to stop? Of course not. But using prudence when crossing has never gotten me in trouble. The most dangerous I've seen is getting off a guagua when the motos pass on the right. You have to look before you step out.

Very tragic indeed. I went past there very shortly after it happened. The ambulance was still there. It was obvious there was a fatality. It was strange because there are no intersections or driveways there. I didn't know what happened. The shoulders of the road in Sosua there are a disgrace. In the US or Europe, the city would now be facing huge lawsuits.
There is little to no interest in the welfare of the public in the DR.
No money in it for politicos to stimulate interest.

When I was a newbie I wondered why Dominicans run across the street when there is nothing coming.
Now I sprint across the street to get out of the roadway asap.

California gives pedestrians the right of way at any designated cross walk or intersection even if unmarked.
I remember jaywalking in California and car traffic would stop and wait for me to cross even though I was breaking the law.
The DR was a real eye opener for me.
.
The DR is the most dangerous place I have ever lived.

Almost as dangerous as trying to cross the road in Montreal and way safer than Egypt, but yes very dangerous. Even crossing on the sidewalk at the school is dangerous.
