Charlise,
there are 4 strains of Dengue.... after being infected by each one , you are immune to that strain.

Some reports state that although immune to that particular strain, you become more susceptible to the next ones.
Hard to say.

In themore acute cases , it's impossible to miss.......like dv8, my first was very mild.
I was quite functional , just flu-like, cold-like symptoms for several days longer than a normal flu or cold would last

I contracted dengue hemorrhagic fever in Cabarete first of August this year and it got very bad and downright scary. Spent several nights at the Cabarete hospital there between Cab and Sosua. When I got to ER my red blood cell count was 38. Minimum count should be 150 in a healthy individual. This is no joking matter and I was fortunate to live. I was literally sleeping 18 to 20 hours a day and had zero energy but due to my distrust for the doctors figured I would gut it out. When I woke up one morning completely purple and swollen, I knew it was more serious than a bad flu. I didn't know what I had but got to the ER and they got me on IV and some other type of medicine right away. The doctor was honest with me and told me, "est?s muy grave." So, thankfully, I lived through the episode. And THANK YOU to the staff at the hospital. I know they get a bad rap by a lot of people but they were there night and day when I needed them and also had the ability to nurse me back to health. We're now back in the states as my wife wanted a break from the DR after that experience. We'll probably return at some point as we love living there but with a very good mosquito repellant plan. All I can say is make sure you fumigate around your home regularly and use mosquito repellant. Please note, there is no known cure for dengue fever, and for those who get to the very serious stage, the mortality rate is 50 percent so take this seriously. I'm just glad to be on the right side of that 50%!

It might be my 5 year old daughter has dengue. Plaquetas were 173 yesterday and 134 today. Doctor says it might be another virus, but it could also be dengue. She has fever coming and going, headaches (though not today that much). New bloodtest tomorrow. She's in a good mood though.

My baby daughter had it almost 2 months ago. Feverish for a couple days and not much energy. We took her to the clinic and within 10 minutes of a blood test they confirmed dengue. I'm sure the doctor would know if you have had 2 tests done. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!

yeah, we got pedialyte and gatorade. I think the plaquetas are not yet low enough to confirm if it's dengue yes or no. We'll see what the plaquetas count says tomorrow....

It is worth looking at Ringo's Posts #55 and 56 in this thread. There has been two significant rainfalls in the last two weeks - 2.7 inches onthe 1st/2nd November and 2.6 inches on 16th thru 18th on the north Coast between Sosua and Cabarete. So the breeding cycle of Pata Blanca mosquito may beggin again!

There has has also been a slight uptick in the number of Dengue like symtoms amongst locals. It would be worthwhile renewing you precautions, understanding the symtoms and the Treatments. Look at DV8, Ringo and Castle posts in this thread!

We have also seen a few pata blanca mosquitoes in our area so recently the potential is there!

Be aware !!!

Mosquito control can't be done piecemeal. You have to aggressively target any breeding pools with spray oil and put out CO2 traps. It takes very little water for them to breed in. The last big program in Puerto Rico was in the 50s to eradicate malaria. It's impossible to wipe out the mosquitoes completely, but if the population is knocked down enough, it can interrupt the disease cycle. It makes a very good case for the limited and acute use of DDT used on the inside of houses, esp in bedrooms.

there was an article in la zeta a while ago about salud publico announcing that they cannot fumigate for mosquitoes every day. the comments were just nasty and spiteful. wtf? people do not understand that it cannot be done.

it makes no sense to fumigate every day during rain season when it rains every night/day. it's just not effective. it makes no sense to fumigate every day if the people also do not take care of their surroundings, remove rubbish, close water tanks and so on. it makes no sense to fumigate every day because the fumes are very unpleasant and toxic and people will start immediately b**ching about how it makes them feel bad. the whole fumigating action needs to be well organized and done at regular intervals. and the population has to follow orders regarding their environment. not likely to happen...

Is there anything that can be done to prevent dengue besides using insect repellent with deet?

there can be done quite a lot in terms of prevention:
regular fumigation,
keeping the area clean and free of rubbish where water may gather,
keeping water cisterns, tanks, tinacos and barrels closed tightly,
treating stored water with cloro,
cleaning animal water bowl regularly,
installing mosquito screens in the windows/doors,
installing mosquito nets over beds, especially for children,
using mosquito repellent candles and spirals,
using mosquito repellents on your skin.
