Describe a Chopo for me
funny you should say that....
I cannot speak for TonyC or Golo, but I am as proper as they come. And even if I did go off the deep end, it would be done tastefully. But you wouldn't know about that, cause you only know how to behave like a chopo.
If you don't like what I represent that is your problem, don't try to make it mine.

Funny you should say that, Forbeca, I was going to put a disclaimer to that effect in my previous post, saying that I was basing my suggestion on cultures upon which I am more qualified to comment.
In my defence let me observe that this type of snobbery is a common trait shared by all humans. The ways in which it manifests itself is the variable.

I'm a lot of things, but a mind reader, never. Thanks for the observation though. I always read your posts very carefully because you are knowledgeable in your comments regarding the DR.
I just want to say something before I go off for the day:
If people don't like what is being said about choponess, why not prohibit such a topic? the thread is going fine, until someone starts to identify himself with what is being said, then it all goes to hell! I don't get it. This is on ongoing thing. Is there something i'm not seeing here?

We have all done something or like something Chopo in our lives. We can't help it. What seperates us from them is the Attitude.
Here is an example. A person can enjoy Bachata and not be a chopo. But if you have it blarring 24/7, Blast is from your car stereo and claim that everybody around the world loves Bachata and that it is the "Best" Music.....You are a CHOPO!
I think for your bachata to make you a chopo you have to turn it up until it breaks the speaker. It's not the volume that counts, it's whether your system can handle the volume. So volume > system capacity = chopo music, unless it's regueton, that's chopo music at any volume.
I think we should have a chopo party and do a bunch of chopo stuff together so all the closet chopos can come out. We can have a drawing for a year's supply of Lemisol, a live regueton DJ with broken speakers, etc.

Two things that Chiri said that are so true: This is a type of snobbery and that a chopo here seems to be someone who tries hard not to be one.
Ok, so since there are so many thoughts on what a Chopo is, Why cant we use it as the original word it has been forever? It means free serviture - how did liking a type of music get involved. Isnt that personal taste? The car you drive, what you want to do with your new-found-money, how you dress... none have to do with the word. Most of the posts are just talking about THEIR own personal taste and how they dont like the other person's.

TallDrink: I like the way you think. You and I need to get together and dance some Bachata sometime...really loud Bachata playing out of the trunk of my Honda Accord (Which I got "hooked up" with huge speakers, all windows tinted so dark that I can barely see even during the light of day, fuzzy dice, a horn that plays "La Cucaracha", one of those alarms that "talks" when you get close to it, and a big *** sign on the windshield that says "EL COTUISANO"), while we drink some Brugal and eat some Espaghetty con pan.

When have I ever said I was part of the elite of the DR? You're the one whose always included me with them. I am from a very resourceful family who have plenty of money and they made it the old fashioned way. They earned it. Do me a favor suarez, and lay off. You're starting to get on my nerves.
This thread started to go sour the minute you got some encouragement from other posters and that's how it's always been. You never miss a chance to bash Golo, TonyC and myself. Noone was pointing fingers in the thread, you started it. I am so surprise the moderators let you get away with that.

1. Aventura (bachata)
2. Antony Santos (Bachata)
3. Bachatazo 2004
4. Santo Domingo 2004 (bachata, merengue, salsa)
5. Elvis Martinez (Bachata)
6. Joe Veraz (Bachata)
You can say I like Bachata. But by looking at me and my life, you would not call me a chopa. I actually have to tell people that Im Dominic

The truth is that this subject cannot be discussed without the alleged chopos or fervent non-chopos taking offence. The best thing is not to take the whole thing too seriously and mock oneself, as our resident chopos suarezn and Tall Drink are doing.

In my hometown they are called "capullos" - don't ask me why. I just know that people can be "capullo" and if you think something is tacky/kitsch/nouveau riche it is described as "capullo". Like chopos, capullos like driving around in cars with darkened windows, blaring out loud music. They wear lots of gold chains. Sounds familiar?
We also have our "blue bloods" known as "el pish". How blue their blood is depends on when their family made its money. Most fortunes in my part of the world were made in the import-export trade* over the centuries. Today's capullo, tomorrow's yacht club member with a cravat and a posh accent thanks to an English public school education. Basically if the present generation of your family had to buy its own furniture, you don't make the grade.
It's as absurd here and there as it is everywhere. Real "class" should have nothing to do with money. But that's another story.
