In Spanish, the usage of the diminutive is a vital part of the language. The meaning it conveys varies from small in size or quantity to a term of endearment. I think correct usage makes your Spanish sound more native, natural and authentic.

You know why Costa Ricans are called Ticos? Yes, it is because of the frequent usage of the diminutive-ico in their speech. Los ticos means los costarricenses.
