I was wondering if the DR people likes pets?
I've heard (it might be stories) that the DR people don't like pets and they treat them bad.

I will be brigning my two dogs to DR and don't want anything to happen to them.

Thank you in advance.

I love it (The response I mean)

Animals are pretty well left on their own to survive. There are way to many strays. The "Vira Latas" a special breed of Dominican dogs are by nature a very friendly. Unfortunately they are becoming more and more mixed with blood from other types i.e. Pit Bulls, German Shepard?s, and other "imports" and are gradually becoming aggressive. Just another example of the foreign influence in the DR. As for your pets, I don't think anybody will mistreat them.

Here Foofoo, here boy

Sorry Diane, but I have to agree with Scaramouch.
This is the Dominican Republic, a decent, democratic country with proud, friendly people. People have pets here too. my favorite family has two dogs for which they paid too much money in my opinion and they treat them as royalty.
This isn?t exactly South Korea, where I was invited to "a special meal" by my hosts, and as I later found out, was treated to dogmeat.
And for your next question : yes, they do have canned dogfood on the island.

As in the whole world there are differences in likes and tastes, so is in the Dominican Republic.
You may find people that love pets and others that don't like them.

Good luck.

Mercedes.

Re: here's the lowdown on pets ;-)

Dominicans like pets. My family has always had pets ever since I can remember, mainly dogs and cats, ah, and we also had a funny parrot once. Some families become very attached to their pets just like here in the US.

However, I think the difference is that generally speaking, we still regard pets as animals...possible carriers of diseases, rabies, etc. (funnily enough we humans should be more afraid of other humans ;-)) Stray or suspect animals are chased away because of this - remember that is wasn't too long ago when rabies was rampant and still today kids have died of this terrible disease due to infected animals. Also, generally, you won't see Dominicans getting too close to animals, i.e., having their faces or hands licked by a dog, you just won't really see that...but it doesn't mean they don't love their pets. More people have pets today it seems, as I am seeing more and more pet stores, adds for vets, etc., specially in Sto. Dgo.

Regards,
Natasha

Dominicans love Hot Dogs!! No really..

I think that Eddy and Natasha have pretty much said what has to be said.
You should be warned that dog napping is not unheard of here, so you should make sure your dogs-if good looking-are well cared for.

At my house we have three Rottys, two of Eddy's "Vira Latus Excelsus" (a special Dominican breed), a Dalmatian bitch puppy and a Guacamayo.

With the dogs, we have found that the Vira latas are better for just general pets. They know about cars and trucks, are very low maintenence, keep strangers away and will bark at strange things in the yards at night. The Rottys are just so huge and so fearsome-looking that nobody in their right mind would think of entering the property without being announced. They would drown anyone foolish enough to get close enough to be slobbered on!!! LOL!!! They eat 1/2 a cow everyday, but the viralatas are our main garbagemen...again LOL! (Tablescraps). Only the Dalmatian gets canned food...and its expensive, as is dry food.

Be sure you have your vet's letter of good health stamped at the Dominican Consulate before coming here or your pets will be in quaranteen for ages.

Have fun!

What I have seen for pets are the roosters and chickens and horses. Of course they come with the benefits of being a food source. Is there on house on the island who does not have these animals? LOL

Please!!
I've never heard of such a thing!!
Maybe in some "barrios" young people will eat a cat or two,
but dogs?? No way.
(and of course there is canned dog food on the "island". We have Supermarkets here)

Thanks everyone for your feedback, really appreciated.
Now I feel better. :)

You're right Hillbilly,

This is a letter I received from the Dominican Republic Customs:
"Documents Required for Cats & Dogs: Rabies vaccination certificate and health certificate obtained at origin. And Birds have a quarantine period of at least 10 days."
