Re: here's the lowdown on pets ;-)
Dominicans like pets. My family has always had pets ever since I can remember, mainly dogs and cats, ah, and we also had a funny parrot once. Some families become very attached to their pets just like here in the US.
However, I think the difference is that generally speaking, we still regard pets as animals...possible carriers of diseases, rabies, etc. (funnily enough we humans should be more afraid of other humans ;-)) Stray or suspect animals are chased away because of this - remember that is wasn't too long ago when rabies was rampant and still today kids have died of this terrible disease due to infected animals. Also, generally, you won't see Dominicans getting too close to animals, i.e., having their faces or hands licked by a dog, you just won't really see that...but it doesn't mean they don't love their pets. More people have pets today it seems, as I am seeing more and more pet stores, adds for vets, etc., specially in Sto. Dgo.
