Am I alone here...Does anyone think its outrageous that we pay close to $150 in taxes for a RT ticket to the DR. Any other place in the world that comes close?..Please enlighten... Who is getting this money? and why do we keep paying it.

Not sure of your city of origin but I wont cry for you....I heard the taxes out of Toronto to the DR just went up to CAD$338 for a RT ticket.

Also, when heading TO the DR, the taxes charged to you, the passenger are by your airport from which you depart.

The DR departure tax of $20 is now included in the cost of the ticket.

Yep it sucks...Sometimes the taxes are more than the ticket itself, and unfortunately it goes to line someone's pocket. Here's the breakdown of a ticket I just bought this week.

ADULT Fare 318.00 USD,
20.00 USD, DO Airport Depart Tax
7.50 USD, US 911 Security fee
30.80 USD, US FET
27.50 USD, DO Airport Authority Fee
30.10 USD, DO Airport Infrastructure Fee
5.00 USD, US Animal Plant Health Inspection Service
13.50 USD, US Passenger Facility Charge
7.00 USD, US Immigration fee
--------------
Total Fare 459.40 USD

Almost 150 USD in taxes....But they know we will pay them so they don't care.

Thanks! Thats what I was trying to explian...the taxes levied are done so by the city/airport of departure, not by the destination country, in this case , DR. Relatively speaking, their taxes are still lower than most major NA cities to which I have travelled.

20$ US Departure Tax & 10$ Tourist Card

I flew from Puerto Plata to Toronto on Tuesday March 25th by Sunwing Airlines & had to pay the 20$ US departure tax.

I was totally surprised & unprepared for this was supposed to be included in our ticket price .... or so I thought.

Others flying by WestJet did NOT have to pay so I am guessing it is up to each operator to decide.

Also, I will mention on the way down that they handed out the tourist visas on the plane & made an announcement that if anyone had small children on the plane and did not pay for a seat for that child would have to purchase a tourist card and could do so onboard the plane for 20$ CAD or 20$ US.

The woman behind me was in such a position & paid the $20 CAD ... saw on the card that is only 10$ US and complained. The airline did nothing about it and told her even though it said 10$ it was really 20$.

I explained that she can buy it when she gets off the plane for 10$ US as the card says and was obviously ripped off by the airline.

Definitely not impressed with Sunwing.

the charges are not just taxes. you will find that if you fly a regular airline like american or delta, or even air canada, the extra fees are usually a lot less than if you book from a tour company such as sunwing, air transat etc.

i think the tour companies include in their charges fees for their services but want you to think they are taxes.

however i still think the dr has highter charges because the same tour companies charge a lot less in taxes and fees or whatever the costs are to go to other counries..the dr. extra charges are the most.

Out of Toronto, whether with a charter airline or a scheduled carrier, the taxes are CAD$338. ( I believe Sunwing is $20 less as you pay that portion when departing the DR.
For Canadians travelling on US carriers to the DR, they need to fly through that particular airlines hub city so it is seldom more economical and the decision is usually because the flights from YYZ are generally 7 or 14 day durations, therefore limiting.

just did a price search. the prices for a/c, westjet, airtrans, skyservice, sunquest were all bet 318 and 338, \
continenal air was 182, delta was 154,,,\

for myself most times i check prices from toronto, buffalo and detroit. yes the tour co. are only 7 or 14 days. i can set the dates on the non tour airlines and stay any amount of days..lately i have found flying out of detroit has been much cheaper than toronto.

on the topic of flights, the things that anoys me is are that there is a much higher price for a two week flight than a one week. Why? you use one seat down, one back.
the other is i am always told that if i want to change a return date with the commercial airlines, i can but have to pay aprox $100. fee..but every time i have tried to change, they have said my fare is not available but i can buy an upgrade for about $300. more plus the fee to change.
