I agree with you in almost all except on the heavyweight boxer.Barnabe said:The only world famous Dominican is Oscar de la Renta. And still, most people just don't know he is Dominican.
"Ministars" are Mary Jo Fernandez, Juan Luis Guerra and Sammy Sosa, that is they have an international reputation but mostly limited to tennis, latin music or baseball aficionados.
If Sammy was a basket ball player he would be THE Megastar.
There is not enough "showbiz" in Felix Sanchez sport to make him a star.
Most names mentioned here are 100% unknown in Europe, and probably in Asia and other continents.
But sure there is a J-Lo or Shakira growing up in DR.
And maybe some heavyweight boxer?

Ashanti is part dominican...I think...
Golo100 said:people trying to come up with any name of any Dominican abroad they know, but that 99.9% of the world don't know. Why keep on trying. I can only agree with those who mention Oscar De La Renta, the baseball star players, Felix Sanchez(who is a U.S. born citizen) and a few movie starlets like Michelle Rodriguez and Zoe Saldana(both are U.S. citizens with mixed parents) Mary Joe Fernandez was a half-*** celebrity. She was mostly known among the tennis set and she never got much celebrity status even among her peers. I know there are great Dominican doctors and scientists abroad, but hardly anybody knows them. People in these professional fields do not achieve celebrity status often. Is not as if we are talking about a Christian Barnard, a Stephen Hawking, or Roger Penrose. We may field a celebrity or two in the next 20 years in the political arena in NYC, when the possibility of Dominicans running for mayor take place. Amelia Vega has taken a step towards celebrity, but she still has ways to go to become a major one. She has not even reached Alicia Machado's status yet. Dead or alive, our greatest celebrity is Rubirosa, followed by Trujillo. Juan Luis Guerra is at best a tropical music celebrity, but has not transcended into "jet set" status. People in his field of music, like Carlos Vives, Santana, and Ruben Blades are better recognized.

While a Dominican might run for mayor of NYC it will be more than 20 years before they will be a factor.Golo100 said:We may field a celebrity or two in the next 20 years in the political arena in NYC, when the possibility of Dominicans running for mayor take place.
