First: Please forgive my Inglish, I did not learn it in a school, but the streets of New York. Im very proude to be a Dominican, but the facts are that we pay more importance to a stranger than our selves. Case in point. For the 7th art interchange conference held in Santo Domingo
The Italian reporter Rene Jaggi of the Italian magazine "unohumo" asked your president Hipolito on the Art work of JLAcosta a Dominican Painter and sculpter, that graduated from SUNY and has studied under the best Italian and German modern masters, and that has made the mistake of concentrating on painting every day life of our culture. I say mistake because his art is most popular in Europe and Asia. Our president Hipolito in the interview said that no Dominican painter, that does not contribute to his couse is really worht a "chele" a penny. When told that his art works will soon be in fernando villalona home page and gallery. He continue to say even more. Fernando Villalona is a balagerita and probably is another tecato tanbien.
My question is Why even say that you are a Dominican? When your own people, only look out side, not whats in side your home.

don't listen to anything IDIOT-POLITO SAYS

Like Erixon just said: Do not pay attention to that Idiot!

Have you ever heard his comments about the poor in DR? He doesnt make sense half of the time and is always joking about what is going on with the situation over there. What he says is a non-issue and once he is gone from the Presidency, hopefully we will never have to hear his stupid quotes again.

(Reporter asks Hipolito: Que dice usted de que el precio de un huevo esta a 3 pesos? Hipolito dice: Tu sabes cuanto trabajo le cuesta a una gallina poner un huevo? Deberian de costar mas! - Say that to an entire family that has to eat their platanos without anything else other than salty water day and day out!!)

For crying outloud!!

Hippo on art???

What does this chopo-mind bald headed idiot Hipolito knows about art? If Hippo hasn't already made the turn into the greatest laughingstock in America, replacing Bucharan, he is close to it. I really think this guy should be in a psychiatric ward. His latest stunt(spilling rum all over his bald head at a political rally) was the drop that spilled him over into complete madness. He even called Leonel's VP candidate an "azarozozo" adding an extra "zo", something that only our biggest illiterate chopos use as a curse line. He keeps topping himself every day as an idiot and jerk. Nobody I know in the world is this dumb and stupid. Could this guy really be Dominican? Can any nationality produce a human trash like Hipolito? I am ashamed to have him as a human body in DR, much less a president. A stray dog or rat with skin rash is more respectable. I would have to restrain myself if he ever addresses me. I would spit right in his face, bodyguards or not. In his early days when he was still less offensive, he passed me by at La Cadena Supermarket(that's all he does..visiting and just loafing)with his entourage and waved hello at me and I stared him back with a look that almost drew his bodyguards' guns. I could not control myself. Thank God I have learned self-control. When I have thoughs about people I would like to see burn in hell, he tops my list. And unbelievably so, I have fared better financially in his administration, but that is due to my resilience as an investor. I prefer to be poorer and not have him around. I would pay higher taxes to get rid of him. Prefiero al maldito DIABLO como presidente. Es mas, hasta un leproso del Valle de los Muertos que sea presidente y no esa mierda de Hippo. Mierda pa ti Hipolito!!!

BRAVO! YOU ARE 100% RIGHT ON THE MONEY ON THIS DING-DONG. EVEN BEFORE HE TOOK OVER IN 2000 I CALLED HIM 'BUCARAM II' BY OBSERVING HIS BEHAVIOR. HE HAS BECOME WORSE LATELY AFTER TAKING OFF THE MASK OF PRETENDING TO BE SOMETHING HE IS NOT. THE PANIC HE AND HIS COHORTS HAVE, REALIZING THEY WILL HAVE TO LEAVE AND FACE THE CONSEQUENCES OF THEIR ABUSES, HAVE MADE HIS MADNESS BECOME MORE ACUTE. E PA FUERA QUE VAN!

what a mistake!

Only the One out of two Dominicans who voted for him!

It's true that 49.85% of the electorate voted for Hippo :bandit: and....what a mistake!....now they realize it but still, in spite of all the taxes, increasing the national debt over 100% in 4 years (by the way, where are those 4 billion dollars?) and devaluing the peso over 150% in a couple of years, he will get, at least, 25% of the votes!....as you may know, he is out and about 'inaugurating public works' on a daily basis and buying consciences by using everybody's money for his reelection purposes...(oh!, now I know where part of that 4 billion dollars is going!).

Sorry Tony but you are WAY off base. Trust me when I tell you this, I work on this everyday. Don't sleep on the Dominican-American community. In the past 10 years there have been 25 elected officials in local political positions throughout the US this means that PR, Colombians, Mexicans, Salvadorians, Whites, Black , etc do and have voted for a Dominican. Historically, this is unprecedented. Dominicans love politics. I will venture to say the first congressperson of Dominican descent will come out of Rhode Island where the highest elected official currently exists. I believe there is already a mayor of Dominican descent in MA. Dominicans within the next ten years can be a viable force if and only if (and when) they develop a concerted agenda. Dominicans will and can be able to be a decisive factor if and when a competitive race is held at local levels. The problem is that many in the community are led to believe that they must go with the flow. Voter registration issues can be easily address and are just a matter of time.

The real question is that once these people are elected we need to determine if they are voting with a pro-Dominican/Latino/immigrant agenda and hustling to funnel resources to meet local community needs.

NYC is maybe an exception to the rule due to its uniqueness in racialized politics among other things. However, this too can be addressed with better-off Dominicans providing resources and donations to meet the needs of struggling NGOs locally and nationwide. Many better off dominicans turn their back on the community and don't donate as they should or to the same extent/degree we see within the Greeks, Indians, Blacks, Mexicans, PR and Asians. We are also not as organized and not a disciplined politically as other groups either and therein lies the problem.

Tony C said:
While a Dominican might run for mayor of NYC it will be more than 20 years before they will be a factor.
There, of course, is a large Dominican Population in NYC but the vast majority are not citizens. let alone registered to Vote.
Then there is a matter of Money(and the political clout that goes along with it). How many Dominicans of wealth reside in NYC? Most of the rich Dominicans rather set up in Miami for various reasons that is of no importance to this thread.
What about the party? As most NYC Dominicans are Democrats will the party accept their entrance into the Political machinary? Will the Puerto Ricans vote for a Dominican? Will the Upper-East Side Limosine Liberals accept them? Will wealthy Dominicans buck the trend of the other Latin American immigrants and support a Democrat?
I can see a Dominican making a serious play for a seat on the City Counsel in 20 years but for Mayor you are looking at 30-40 years.

Hi Chiri

See my posting responding to Tony...ya'll are really way off base here.
Dominicans are currently within the City Council, State Assembly, State Senator, and Mayoral levels. Two dominicans have already run for Congress. One did very well in the primaries. I would venture to guess that we have about 50+ appointed political officials nationwide of Dominican descent, 30 of which are in NJ alone. The highest was the Assistant Secretary of State to the Governor McGreevey in NJ and we also have people positioned within Governor Pataki in NY.

To tie it to the thread....Does this qualify them as celebrities...sure in their community. Nationwide? Recognition is needed but it can only be achieved if Dominicans choose to work together rather than trying to hog the spotlight, practicing politics Dominican-style as practiced in DR. In my opinion it is too close to a dictatorship for my comfort level.

PEACE

There has been at least one Dominican councilman in NYC, Guillermo Linares, in office in the 1990s. I think there has been another, but I can't remember his name.

Give Them The Benefit Of A Doubt

...

Give them the benefit of a doubt....let's hope that all the years in the U.S. makes them more American than Dominican, or at least balances them out....I am sure that my disgust with Dominican politics, and many other day-to-day things, is due to all my years in the U.S. and my American schooling and upbringing....although I was disgusted at 15, in 1965, when LBJ sent troops here and the networks showed them embracing the right-wing faction while all the time the U.S. government claimed their troops were neutral....I was also very disgusted with the whole Watergate deal with the stonewalling, erased tapes, etc. and thoroughly enjoyed the hearings where Nixon's cohorts were exposed for what they were....etc., etc. oops! I dated myself!

It wasn't a mistake. Dominicans voted for him because they knew that they had more of a chance to get their hand in the "Cookie Jar" then with Balaguer or Fernandez. Selfish and greedy voters are the best kind!

AND THE PRD PEOPLE HAVE SURELY MADE IT THEIR TOP PRIORITY...ALWAYS...THEY GOVERNED FROM 1978-1982 AND THE PRESIDENT, ANTONIO GUZMAN, COMMITTED SUICIDE IN THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE 40 DAYS BEFORE LEAVING OFFICE....FROM 1982-1986, SALVADOR JORGE BLANCO GOVERNED AND MADE THE SAME MISTAKES AS HIPPO BUT ON A MUCH LOWER SCALE AND WOUND UP BEING CONVICTED OF CRIMES AND HIS COWARDICE DROVE HIM TO DRESS AS A WOMAN TO ESCAPE THE COUNTRY(!!)...HE IS NOW ONE OF HIPPO'S TOP SUPPORTERS (SURPRISE??)...AND YOU KNOW ALL ABOUT HIPPO AND HIS GANG!

THE PRSC OR COLORAOS (RED) SURE DID THEIR THING WITH THE COOKIE JAR DURING BALAGUER'S 22 YEARS IN POWER AND HAVE DONE SO WITH FERNANDEZ IN 1996-2000 AND WITH HIPPO NOW....THE MAIN TWO NAMES THAT COME TO MIND ARE AMABLE ARISTY OF THE MUNICIPAL LEAGUE AND LILA ALBUQUERQUE WHO WAS SPEAKER OF THE CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES....
AND IN THE PLD OR MORAOS (PURPLE) THERE ARE A FEW THAT LIKE TO PUT THEIR HANDS IN THE COOKIE JAR TOO BUT I BELIEVE THEY ARE THE LEAST OF ALL!
