someone told me Wycleff Jean was Dominican..... can anyone confirm ?

OH LORD HAVE MERCY! Wyclef is Haitian as far as TrackMaster i met them while working at Chung king Studios Downtown we did plenty of tracks for many Artists. Back then the team was composed of two guys one Panamenian and the other was Dominican (Ramon Orlando's Nephew) really cool guy.

As far as the Beatnuts (JUJU) is Dominican (i like those guys)

Take a look at many of those Hurnter Videos Productions often co-directed By Rico-Rich (A Dominican from L.A.) personal friend of mine.

MORE to come!

Please let's keep this thread on focus i love it.

What is a celebrity? Who qualifies as one? How far reaching is the celebrity status?

As far as I am concern, to be a celebrity you must have worldwide recognition. In my opinion, being known in a small market does not even make you famous.

As much as I like and enjoy Noriega, one of my favorite fun type dance music interpreters, he does not qualify as a celebrity. Michelle Rodriguez has miles to go yet. She is at the stage where Jlo was before she played Selena and perhaps not even that far yet. Andres Garcia is mixed Dominican and mostly a local case(Mexico, South America and hispanic communities)

Ask about any of these names in Japan, China, Russia and you would get a WHOOOO?

Apart from our important baseball players, like Sammy Sosa, our biggest world celebrity, Pedro Martinez a far second and Alex Rodriguez(not truly Dominican) the only real Dominican celebrity is Oscar De La Renta. Juan Luis Guerra follows him very far. Felix Sanchez needs the summer olympics gold to reach the status yet.

The rest are just sectionally important in specific areas or fields. Aside from baseball players, we have more dead celebrities than live ones. Our biggest celebrity ever was Rubirosa. Maria Montez was better known in her time than any Dominican actress alive. Trujillo was a celebrity.

But the names mentioned in most of these posts are not worth beans as celebrities, at least not yet. There is something called "pay your dues" first.

TW

YOU ARE WRONG! YOU COULD BE A CELEBRITY IN JARABACOA FOR GOD sake it's all about recognition.

YEAH YEAH and this guy used to live in the U.S.A. i guess he did not learn the meaning of LIFE

Well, although I personally dislike him & his act, Julio Sabala the impersonator has become very well known in the Spanish-speaking world (yeah, Golo, I know that is hardly global).

Golo, your sports list excluded Juan Marichal, the "Dominican Dandy," the baseball hall-of-famer. Was that on purpose, or just an oversight?

No one has mentioned Johnny Ventura. Among merengue afficionados of the older generation, he is very well known. I went to a concert of his once in Washington, and the place was packed -- but few Dominicans!

All,
Can you name some dominican american celebrity figures or dominican celebrities that live outside of the DR?

Here's my shot at it:
Merlin santana-an actor, who died a few years ago.
Noriega aka victor santiago-a rapper
Fabulous-a rapper,with partial dominican ties.
Miguel A. nunez-an actor whom I kinda think is dominican.

I didn't mention sports figures,because there's so many,haha!

Anyone else care to add?

Carl e.
I believe the question was: LIVING OUTSIDE OF THE DR.

Other celebrities

God, I had forgotten about Mary Jo Fernandez!!!!!

Angela Carrasco had her days in Spain.

Besides Michelle Rodriguez, we also have Zoe Salda?a making the rounds in Hollywood. I agree with Golo in that they have a long way to go, but at least they're closer to "it" than any of us ;)

Everybody is listing singers, Musicians and Actors.

What about people of importance? Politicians, writers, Journalists, Captains of Industry?
Sorry to say there is not much there!
It has amazed me that considering the amount of Dominican there are in the US they have little or no political clout.

Face facts....The most famous Dominican in the US is "Dominican Lou" from SNL!

The topic was "CELEBRITIES" another key phrase "OUTSIDE the DR" so politiicians are excluded unless they were exiled by stealing money from the government.

Celebrities would lean more to people who entertain than
Civic Leaders, Laywers, etc unless Johny Cochran is Dominican who reached celebrity statis.

Are there not Politicians and civic leaders of note in the US from other Latin-American countries? Mexican Americans? Cubans? Puerto Rican?
For me an entertainer is just that "An Entertainer". Actors, Musicians, Circus Clowns all the same. Some just do it better than others but they all exist for one reason only. To Amuse me. Just like most atheletes. They are not role models. They are of no significant importance to me nor should they be to you.

Juan Marchal, Mary Jo fernandez and Alex Rodriguez

We are presented here with the 100 year old argument of citizenship. Who is Dominican and who is not? If we go by the argument that citizenship is the one "you wish or desire", then Alex Rodriguez and Felix Sanchez can be considered Dominican. But legally they are not. There is no law or place in our constitution for automatically nationalizing children of Dominicans born abroad. My son was born in New York of Dominican born parents. He is all American, although he has Dominican blood running thru his system. He considers himself American and does not like Dominican Republic.

Alex Rodriguez was born July 27, 1975 in New York City. The bio shown here indicating he was born in DR is bogus. I have his baseball card and CNN as well as ESPN player records show me right. Alex has admitted many times he wishes he was born in DR. But accepts he was not. He has also been very ambiguous about his situation, wanting to appear Dominican in DR, but American in the U.S. He has never ran the bases showing our flag.

On the other hand, Mary Jo Fernandez hates to be called Dominican. She has publicly denied she is Dominican and wants nothing to do with us. She feels totally American. Unfortunately for her, she appears to have been born here based on information seen all over. So, what is a Dominican? What you wish or what you really are?

Another weird case is that of Albert Pujols. This guy keeps everybody wondering about his nationality. He has never made it clear to America he was born in DR. Most Americans believe he is a U.S. citizen and born in the U.S. He is not trying hard enough to convince anybody.

As for Marichal, he is tryly a celebrity, but he is below Sammy Sosa and Alex Rodriguez in world recognition right now. He is not even at the level of Pedro Martinez. That is why I did not bother with the guy. I could be wrong, but even Manny Ramirez may be known better. Even in DR Marichal cannot draw a crowd where those above can.

Just curious....is AZB or Criss a celebrity just because they are well known in DR1? Your answers will clear wether or not a person in Jarabacoa is a celebrity. Then you could also be a celebrity in Palma Sola, a village with less people than DR1 members. Take your pick. I will also accept my undeserved celebrity status.

some of my favorites

the chief pilot at AA's training center in Dallas: Rafael Padilla (I think that is the last name)

Very successful MD in Phoenix, AZ, Dr. Severino

A few more at the Cleveland Clinic.

Dr. Bencosme, pioneer researcher on pancreas, thought to have been nominated for Nobel in Medicine...

I'll bet that there are a bunch more MDs that are regionally or professionally famous..celebrities, they are not. But important to their professions and communities, they are...

Frank Moya Pons, historian and author of excellent history of the DR, read in most courses on Caribbean or Latin American History or Politics. Don't forget Bernardo Vega, who has published a bunch of stuff in English..

Don't forget the manager of the Year, Tony Pe?a...

Celebrity is fleeting...

I agree, being famous and being a celeberity to two different things to me.

Those above may be know as a "famous public figure" but celebrity, I leave that to people who get constent television coverage and even those who reach the tabloid press.

What is Hipolito?

He is not a celebrity
he is not a famous person

what he is is a Public Official. He is not even a world public official.

If he becomes a Dictator, then he may get publically noticed by the world as one of the many dictators, but not enough to make a dent in the world radar.
