Dominican Cheese

Why is dominican cheese so bad???It won't even melt if you fry it,bake it boil it or use a flame thrower...
most everything else produced by this country is wonderful....pork,chicken,fruits,vegetables,sausages.....
just a question as I had a terrible time with mac and cheese last night...I usually buy US or French cheeses,but was out so I used Sosua cheddar....

You must be talking about 'queso blanco'.
It's absolutely tasteless but can be used as eraser or an artificial marshmallow.

Everywhere I go in the world, I allways find some very good cheeses. Even in the United States..! As many of you I find the dominican cheese a little bit bland. But a country (like Dominican Republic) with is own cheese is a country with culture and taste. Bravo !

PS: if you have some tips for the best cheeses in DR just let me know.

To me and most dominicans I would say that Domincain chesse is pretty good. The problem comes when dominicans try to imitate other types of chesses thats when we become a mess. But I would say that true Dominican chesse can be compared with the best chesses around the world.

Really? where are these cheeses, I would love to know I love a good piece of cheese. I know my father always buys those cheeses sold by those little shops on the side of the road, is a white cheese and is pretty good, stringy.
El queso de bola, in the red wrapping is ok, I prefer to buy gouda here where I am, they are very similar and the dominican one is a little dry and hard.

Not sure if we're talking about the same cheese...it's a big white ball...very rubbery and stringy! And yes, kinda tasteless. But atleast it smells like cheese! LOL! The first time I had it, I was like "ummm, this is supposed to be cheese?" But somehow, I've taken a liking to it and have it occassionally. I guess it kinda reminds me of bocconcini cheese...well...maybe a little bit.

You are talking about queso "de hoja" and, yes, it's very similar to bocconcini cheese, but cheaper

I've never understood the appeal of those small white cheese balls, that come in a plastic bag of 10 or 15. Tasteless rubber. HOWEVER , I have noticed that if I pick them up on the way down from Santiago, along with a bag of galletas, my wife is very happy and always appreciative.

Queso crema is great in sandwiches and salads and not as salty as fetta, queso de freir is a good alternative to paneer in Indian cooking, and queso de hojas is not unlike mozzarella.

Queso en Hoja

There's a place on the North coast near Cabrera that sells some of the best white cheese in the country. Their farm is right next to their shop and the cheese is great. It depends where you buy it. The texture and the salt content are important.

The round one that come in a red paper wrapping is Queso Geo.
There is a small quantity of goat cheese here.
the Queso de Freir is great for diets if you don't fry it!!
The Redondo factory in POP does have some variety, you might want to visit it..

I like the red paper wrapping one that Hillbilly mentioned. I just learned the name is Queso Geo. Thanks! I also like to eat the queso de freir without frying it as a snack. I don't eat it like that because I am on a diet but because it tastes good like that.

Are there other dominican cheeses, or only those two? geez I hope not. My favorite is Queso de oja, the stringy one. You can also serve it with Guava paste and dominican crackers mmmmm.

Dominican Geo Cheese (Queso Tipo Holandes)

My boyfriend who is Dominican just got back from DR and brought back some cheese. LOL! He's so sweet. It was a big round ball wrapped in red paper. I called him up when I was ready to eat it becasue I didn't know if I should eat the red part along with the yellow part. What do I know. . . :ermm: Anyway, he says that the red part comes right off and that you don't eat the red part. I didn't come off, so I cut it off. He also said that it would have a bit of an odd smell to it. Most the best cheeses from around the world have a bit of a smell! It looked so good! I love cheese, by the way. This cheese lacked texture and taste and I didn't enjoy it. I gave it 2 out of 5.

It's the thougt that counts!!!

PS my parents are from Puerto Rico and they alway ate queso blanco that is salty and has the texture of an eraser! I love queso blanco! Yummie with bananas!:cheeky:

there is a guy in La Vega who makes magnificent cheese. huge wheels of aged dairy jewelry. the rest of the stuff i have encountered is good for use as a chock for your car, when you jack it up.
