Angelina in her interview stated that she is indifferent to clothes at all. I am kind of getting to this point myself, and don?t buy any new ones anymore. Fashion only looks pretty on pictures, but is not worth time and money in reality.

Speaking of expats being experts:
.....Then the same dominicans tell me no matter what I do, I can never know as much as a dominican. hhahahaha. lets just go anywhere in this country and see who knows me more. I bet the dominican host would be totally unknown and I will have a bunch of dominicans shaking my hand and greeting me with my name. So please, leave this ghetto talk to yourself, I have seen it all and still seeing it everyday.

By your litmus test you and Barack Obama could tour the DR in much the same manner and everyone would want to shake HIS hand and know HIM by name and wonder how a "ghettoazz" nobody like YOU snuck into his entourage....and he knows Jack about the DR, probably doesn't even remember Leonel's last name.

Silly analogy.

You just refuse to get it, no wonder you guys have so much trouble in this country.
I know the people here personally. I am no celebrity, the people who will shake my hand, know me personally and most probably were under my care.
Do I have to spell everything for you guys?
By the way, why are you so offended by my statement? why would you care if anyone knows me or shakes my hand? This statement was directed towards dominican york wannabe dominican patriots.

often times I feel you are just another tourist and not an actual dominican.

I travel to the DR often and have studied there and lived there before. You are right.....I am not Dominican and would never pretend to be. I am who I am. I'm an American who knows a good deal about the DR but will never be Dominican. I'm cool with that. You should be too.

if you knew anything about classy women, you would know already that whatever the barrio women do, the classy women don't do. Simple as that.

Thank you for proving my point in my last post.

if the barrio women try to imitate girls from from well known families, you will see that no matter what they do, they will always give away by doing something cheap.

Yes that would make sense considering most barrio people come from humble beginnings. Duh. Again you are proving the points in my last post. Wealthy, "well-known" families dictate societal norms. Even when it comes to fashion.

They try too hard to impress people. In simple words, you just can't pass a donkey for a spanish race horse.

Maybe you should try taking your own advice for a change.

I agree with you on some level. However, I believe Fashion is dictated by a bunch of gay men :) and it is adopted or not by the Wealthy because yes they have the means to do so.

Also, what JR picture shows is Red Carpet Fashion. This is Hollywood, fantasy land, not real life for 99.9 % of the world.Angelina Jolie does not dress like that.

The point was about wealthy people in general. The picture's not important to the point I'm trying to make.

Speaking of expats being experts:
So who is more of an expert: a dominican who lives in his barrio and does the routine everyday and doesn't deviate from the same friends and family or an expat who talks to dominicans everyday from all walks of life, from a campo farmers, to car mechanics, to bankers and also to people who have streets named after them? Back pain doesn't spare anyone, whether you are a servant or a president of a country. I have been in touch with people from all walks of life for 12 yrs in this country. There is a mix of people coming to my office from every corner of this country, from villages that you people have not even heard of and then all of a sudden a general or a senator walks in too. I have to see people for 15 visits so this means, we get to spend a good bit of time together. I have had celebrities come to my office, famous baseball players, well known politicians, musicians, well known public figures, church bishops and then a good variety of campo people to people from low down dangerous barrios as well. So you guys are questioning the validity fo my views and my observation of dominicans? Please give me a break, I think I know more about all varieties of dominicans than an average domincian york wannabe.
Then the same dominicans tell me no matter what I do, I can never know as much as a dominican. hhahahaha. lets just go anywhere in this country and see who knows me more. AZB,

I came to realize long ago that your problem isn't with the "barrio style" or "barrio culture" at all. It's with "those kind of people". I still have yet to understand your antipathy towards them. Out of curiosity have you ever worked in a Dominican slum or any of these barrios that you're always lambasting? I have. Maybe you should try it.....it would sure help you see a different point of view besides "Santiago's finest".

why would I work there? tell me what benefits I would gain from working in slums or interacting with people there more than I have to? What is so honorable about being friends with people from slums, why the Romanticism with people in ghettos? Man if you feel right at home there, then more power to you. I am quiet satisfied with the people from there who come to me. I don't have to go to them.

Just out of curiosity, who here has actually spent time on Av. Venezuela on a Friday or Saturday night?

If so, what did you see, observations etc?

Bump!

Anyone, apart from AZB?

We have lots of knowledgeable people in this thread, surely some of you can share your observations of Av. Venezuela on a Friday or Saturday night???

The bomba in front of Eclipse packed with people.
The Merc's, BMW's, custom jeeps all over the place.
Lots of guys wearing silver and gold clad t-shirts etc.
The difference in music at House Drink and Cool Bar?
What the girls are wearing?
What was the latest gossip etc?

I have been clubbing all over the capital - I did not see anything that was overly impressive.

Compared to Moca it was impressive, but then again so is Barnsley.....

I'm asking about observations, not if it's impressive or not.

Fashion, people, looks, trends etc?

From my experiences in SDQ going out, the area around Av Venezuela is tight clothing, gold chains, blaring bachata and mambo

The more upscale venues (spread around) were either more like Barcelona or Miami... with less bachata, more slas and some us music

But that's just my experience and not very extensive at that...there was also a distinct color line between the two areas
