As funny and unique as some DR names are I was watching the local news in Canada today and they interviewed a guy named Charles Weasel Head. Honest I cant make this sh!t up. He even looked kinda weaselly.
First nation (Indian) Canadians have some of the most original names you can think of
Joe Running Bear
Sally Yellow House
Johnnie Walking Down the Highway
Traditionally they are named after the first thing the mother sees or does. Two Dogs Screwing lives just outside Winnipeg. OK I made that one up.

My sister-in-law is a blood Indian from Alberta and her last name is Crow spreads his wings, and her mothers' family's last name is calf-robe.
I actually like some Dominican names- one of the girls at the school is Yoeldi Matika , and her sister is Rossy Marcheli

OMG. They named her Crow Spreads HIS Wings. I hope the feminist cops don't see this.

Hah, like they would make a fuss with native traditions. Lots of Dominican kids have English names that are pronounced the same as the English pronunciation but spelt in Spanish. Yenifer. Yaimili (Jamielee)
.......etc.

Jeez! that ought to be a crime!

None of these compare to the real life society dame here in Santiago whose nickname is "Cuca", her last name is Llenas and she married a guy
whose last name was Bello.

Just pronounce it the 'Dominican' way....

That's a fact, Jack..

I have a cousin whose first name is Lironl?... named after baseball player Leron Lee.

Somewhere in the D.R. there has to be a Maikol Yoldan Guerrero.

I like Mexican northern music. A recent favorite song is "la foray fay". I couldn't figure it out. Even after the video it still didn't make sense. It refers to a 45. As in colt 45 pistol. Foray Fay = 45. Makes perfect sense now.

In Colombia they don't say feyboo, the say face.

Btw, does anyone think Maikol is spelled incorrectly? I don't.

in DR there is no such thing as "misspelled name". i have seen more versions of a name stephanie than you thought existed.

esthepany, estepani, estefany, estefhani... i could go on. letters added, letters skipped. it's like the people giving those names were the last in line of a game of chinese whispers.

Dominicans just knew that 'John' had an 'H' somewhere... somewhere after the 'J' but before the 'N'

Then there's Yhon and Yohn, or just plain Yon.

because the H is silent it's just inserted randomly wherever the fantasy of the parent puts it.

I think the idea is that jh is pronounced like "dj" as in the English name John. The H has something to do with the sound of the J.
They know there is an h in there, and of course, the h in john is silent in English.
The closest way to spell "John" in Spanish would be LLON or YON, and that looks weird.

English spelling is also pretty messed up. Compared to Spanish, it is illogical. In Italian, it's Gianni.

Haitian names seem backwards to Americans: Robinson Pierre, Williamson Charles, Smith John.
