It might not be a great choice, as Dominicans cannot say words starting with an "S" without adding an "E" before, like "Essamanta".
And the accent on the syllables would be in the wrong places.
It does not sound pretty in Spanish.

Dominicans have problems with words starting with "S"? (De que campo tu eres?) thats a new one for me. Growing up i never had problems with such things and never did any of my friends. btw theres plenty of Samanthas in DR. just change the "th" for a plain "t" so it will be Samanta.

here are some names that i know are dominican (from the women in my family)

Sobeida
Loida
Petra
Glenis
Ercilia
Leini
Diomaris
Oriana
Yecilia
Maude
Loija
Dellanira
Keti
Isayra
Yecenia
Paola
Fina
Rita
Ramona
Soriana
Amarilis
Nemesia

I dont get this one

I have a friend and he named his daughter Hanoi (the capital of VietNam) why would you name your sweet beautiful daughter something like that....why not a name like Carolena or Isabella or something soft and sweet that rolls off your tongue, and makes you smile when you say your babies name. His other daughter is Vanessa. she lives in the USA with her mom. Hanoi lives in the DR. I asked him about the name Hanoi, and he said it sounded exotic. I still dont understand. anyone heard of this name for a little girl before ?

Well

Although this is an old thread....it continues.
Since most of the Dominican population is averaging
way below 50 years old, and they most likely don't have
a clue about Vietnam, and names here are mostly tied
to some archaic Catholic reference, I would say if you
take Hanoi out of all that previously referred to context,
then, well, Hanoi doesn't seem like such a bad name for
a little girl does it? They won't pronounce the 'H' anyway.
So in English it will sound like 'annoy'. Not pretty in English,
at all, but in espanol, no too bad.......sounds better to my
American ear than Yedylkis, or Cruz Maria or Adamira or some such.
Matter of the parents I guess. After the kid gets older and hates
her name she'll change it to a nickname anyway.
My assistant's name is Rosaura and she hates it and calls herself
'Suzie', but her mom gave her the given name 'cause it was her
mother's name. Longer story but I'll leave it at that.
cheers

good point

yes I have to agree with you, in comparison, Hanoi doesnt seem so bad. and you are right. maybe everytime her dad would say her name all I heard was annoy, and that just seemed so wrong. but with the accent, ( yes to me he has an accent and to him I do ) it does sound exotic. I just have a hard time not hearing everything in plain old boaring english. its not the most romatic sounding language out there. take care.

Earlier this year, while indulging in one of my hobbies - whacky-name-spotting - I noticed the posters for one of the PLD electoral candidates in San Juan de la Maguana featured a young, but definitely grown up, woman called Hanoi.

Immortalised in my blog.
