I used to travel the world often. When doing so I would always send my mother a post card every time I visited somewhere new. Out of 40 or so different different countries, mailing one from the Dominican Republic (Puerto Plata 2012) was the only card she never recieved.

These countries want low tariffs?
No problem but America expects the same courtsey especially when taking into account how much free taxpayer dollars they have been recieving from US citizens for generations.
You mean like the 25% tariff on foreign built pickups the US has had for more than 50 years, the restriction on sugar imports back to the Cuban revolution, the 17 percent on baby formula that they have had in place for a long time that bit them in the ass when the Abbott plant was shut down for contamination, that courtesy. I have shipped postcards from Hong Kong, Cyprus, Germany, New Zealand, Argentina, France, and the DR, and my mother got them all.

I don't know if there is a connection, but I bought some American Greek yogurt this morning and the price and the VAT were higher than the price I paid a week prior.
All Dominicans who sell anything now have the excuse to raise their prices. If customers ask why, they will answer 'because of new tariffs, have you read the newspaper'? So even cleren can become a little bit more expensive now, not only yogurt :)

The very same thing the USA complains are unfair when other countries do it. Almost every country does it for some Agricultural products, the DR with rice.

Look around your house and see what you own that was made in China, including parts in Cell phones. Then read this.............

China was already subject to a 20% tariff when Tump announced the additional levies on Wednesday during a ceremony in the Rose Garden at the White House. Beijing now has an effective U.S. import tax rate of 54%, one of the highest for any major American trading partner. The new U.S. tariff rate on China comes into effect on April 9.........

Right. Sorry. I don't think it will affect the DR much.
Obviously new North American manufactured vehicles imported to the DR will be more expensive. They already are because of the DR import fees. The Ford F-150 pickup is Ford’s biggest money maker and its price is expected to increase by a minimum $7500 due to tariffs. That’s a big chunk of change and US Ford dealerships are saying they won’t be able to move them to middle class buyers, their main market.

You don’t see many in the DR. You see Asian pickups that are much cheaper. I can see China and other Asian vehicle producers grabbing more of the pickup/suv market in the DR because of the increased prices of North American vehicles.

I also expect to see more Chinese goods on DR store shelves because of an increase in the price of US goods. People with limited incomes are still a large part of the DR population. They will continue to buy the less expensive local goods and the less expensive imported goods.

There is a window of opportunity for the DR if they are smart enough to realize it. Canadian snowbirds are selling up and leaving Florida and Arizona in droves because of the weak Canadian dollar and US tariffs imposed on Canada. They are looking to purchase property elsewhere, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Belize being some of their favourite places. Simplifying pensioner residency procedures and implementing a six month snowbird visa might attract more Canadian real estate buyers to the DR.

The DR won’t have a problem coping with the impacts of 10% US reciprocal tariffs. US consumers can easily absorb the extra cost of discretionary purchase items like rum, and cigars. As long as the AI resorts are filled with US tourists and the ladies on Pedro Clisante Street have a US clientele to service, it will be business as usual in the DR. Just stay away from North American car dealerships.

Yep! The SKY is the limit on the cost of Chinese goods in the US as the tariff war heats up between the US and China. Pardon the pun. Chinese goods are imported directly to the DR. I don’t think the price of Chinese goods will go up significantly in the DR. Chinese goods like wide screen tv’s, cell phones, ordered from the DR through places like Amazon in the US, will definitely be higher.

The price of crude oil is dropping because of a downturn in world economies caused by the tariffs. The price at the gas pumps will probably drop for a while but I don't expect that to happen at DR gas pumps. What goes up in the DR rarely comes down.

I had been shopping for a full size F150 for two years. They are not available here, only the smaller Ranger and Ranger Raptor. Any that you see on the street came from another country. I contacted several different channels at Ford and nobody was able to give me an answer as to why. I gave up and I bought a full-size Chevy Silverado ZR2. Same thing with the Chevys. They offer a limited number of options. To buy new my only two options were the Chevy Silverado ZR2 and the High Country.

What was the DR Silverado price, if you don’t mind my asking? They start at $55K Canadian here. Looked at the smaller Ford Ranger and the Chevy Canyon. They are now in the same price range as the Toyota Tacoma which I’m leaning towards. In my province, the current North American pickup inventory is tariff free. New delivery won’t be. They’re moving off the dealer lots here fast. Dodge Rams not so fast. I rented a Mazda crew cab 4wd long bed diesel pickup a few times in the DR. Nice machine.

Specifically, it’s not the Silverado, which is around $55,000. It’s the Silverado ZR2 which has a 3 inch lift kit from the factory and 35 inch tires with other off-road features. It is $76,000 USD here in the DR, which is about the same price that it is in the US. That I did not understand. I got it from Santa Domingo Motors in Santiago. I worked with a gentleman named Ivan and he was fantastic. I cannot say enough good things about the guy. He was very professional and answered all my questions the whole time through the process.

I’m surprised! That’s a good price. Similar to what I would pay in Canada. Nice beast!

The US 10% tariff on DR goods is small potatoes. They can’t hurt the US economically. They seem more like an afterthought than anything else.

If posts are NOT about how the tariffs will affect the DR, then they will be edited or deleted.

The RD definitely loses out on this deal. Concrete will be going up again.
