There is no "Clean Coal",...just "Cleaner Coal"!!!!
For those of you who are "Spanish Impaired", "dv's" link says that the "DR Coal Fired Electricity Plants" are "On Hold"!
For NOW!!!!!!!!
Since so many government officials are salivating over their "Commisions" if the plants are built I say they will go ahead.
CCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

On hold, for what reason. We need power now.

Coal ash was/still is a problem in the DR. A few years back....lots of it was "dumped" in the DR....came from a power plant in Puerto Rico.

Major scandal.....but like all other scandals here....they eventually go away...and a few politicians profit handsomely for allowing their country to be a dumping ground....business as usual.

Irregularities in the bidding process....claim filed by one of the bidders.

Even if they want to build it (and I don't believe they will build a coal fired plant), a) they have no financing in place; b) you are looking at completion sometime in late 2017....if they do get financing.

Either way the DR does NOT have a serious generation problem....it has a cost per kwh and payment problem.

Dominican Republic Govt. snubs court order on power plants

Santo Domingo.- Despite the Superior Administrative Court order to halt the call for tenders to build two coal-fired power plants near the southern city of Bani, the head of Dominican Republic’s Electric Utility (CDEEE) on Thursday said the work will continue.

Ruben Jimenez Bichara also blamed the ruling on sectors "which were left out and try to boycott the project." He didn't identify the sectors.

“Under no circumstance will we stop the process, we call on the sectors to stop attempting against the project, that we will not stop. The country needs it,” the official said.

He said the ruling doesn’t apply to the project at Punta Catalina, and "only refers to the call for tenders."

He called the ruling senseless and an "inconsistency" between the cost approved in the Budget and the cost of the work, which allocated a ceiling of US$1.5 billion when the tender was for US$2.4 billion.

"A US$1.9 b billion project cannot be paid out in one year, or in a yearly budget,” the official said in a press conference at CDEEE offices.

With year-round sunshine, why not?

solar power is still kinda expensive. even for a single family house it would cost quite a lot to install and there is also maintenance issue. and i don't think the need for renewable energy is quite pressing yet. maybe in few decades.

With solar, wind etc. you are forced to make a double investment, as there will be days without wind or sunshine, and you're forced to ramp up some other power.

Keep your eye on the new, cheaper storage batteries.

I am waiting for a government announcement about making everyone pay for the electricity they actually use.
