DT forum did not just shut down suddenly. the closure was in the works for quite a while. about a year or so ago, it stopped taking new membership, with a view to winding things down. it was a joke, anyway, and had gone into steep decline ever since the founding members ran away, and took their laptops with them. it became a clearing house for racist, anti Haitian bashing, Dominican triumphalism, and just the entire gamut of tomfoolery. as one of its erudite posters, long gone characterized it; it was the ghetto of the internet.

nobody is going to be missing anything...begone.

wow. it's amazing how vicious people can be. enough to shut down a project that started off like dr1, with purpose to be informative and helpful.
i looked at their forum few times and they had similar structure to this, with sub forums meant to share information.

This is certainly an interesting thread. I feel like I'm getting to see a whole new side of this community.

it does speak to the value the forum members bring to this site. You long time posters have created a unique and valuable body of knowledge. You create value to this website. Seems to me that mods do a lot more work than I am aware of. Of course, it is a private business entity. We are the pretty girls they put in the window table to draw in a better clientele.

Honestly, it seems to me it works. I have searched and wasted hours to find a similar forum on panama and colombia. On a colombia site there were real life reprisals against negative postings and it was shut down. Tout Suite!!! oh, grammar nazis, I know it is toute de suite.

it started off with some really sharp guys. some of the opinion pieces were stellar. then the usual suspects joined in, and it became a carnival of nonsense. i remember reading the opinion of a guy who stated that just as Dominicans had "taken over" baseball in the USA, they were taking over basketball. he based that on the fact that the DR had one star, Al Horford, and one bright prospect. guys just spouted rubbish on a daily basis, and the heavyweights just packed up and fled.

real life reprisals can happen anywhere. people are people, and it is because of such possibilities that people like to maintain anonymity. people who want to be viewed as being worthwhile human beings should not be giving out clues as to who other posters might be. the mods should take drastic action against such violations of privacy.

I believe there are some posters here, who mistakenly think you are talking about a "DR1" forum being "Shut Down".
You ain't!!!
The "DT" site had nothing to do with ANY, "DR1" forum/site, or post.
"Mauricio", was not "Bad Mouthing" DR1.
His comment was in "Jest".

Nobody is asking you to stay here, if you feel like your wasting time...by all means LEAVE..
Sorry if I touched a soft spot....in Dutch we have a word 'zelfspot' which basically means to joke about your own behavior. I spent probably too much time on dr1, time I could maybe use for other, more productive things, but maybe I just like to waste some time.

i am not a tech guy, so i cannot verify this, so please take it with a grain of salt. there were guys hackingthe heck out of the site. postings would just disappear, from one minute to the next. secondly, it did not have the 15 minute feature that DR1 has, wherein you cannot edit your posting after a certain amount of time has elapsed. so, guys would make outrageously stupid remarks, and, when corrected, would just open the edit function and change what they said, months later. the third thing was that some guys had rigged the system to redirect it to porn sites. there was also a time when spammers took over the site, and nobody could post, because they had taken up all the available space.

it is all convoluted, but the owners had just about had enough...

Well this is just a travesty!

I used to go there to read the "true gospel" as posted by Cabarete's most famous soap box preacher, William. Now where am I to turn for true spiritual guidance? I feel not unlike a shipwreck tossed about on the rocks.

Someone here said that he had gotten kicked off Dominican Today. I believe that was a long time ago?

Several of his main accounts were banned here and there, but like a resistant viral strain, you can never eradicate it completely!

The joys of running a forum.

You need a good solid base of moderators, which we have. You need to back them 100% and sometimes step in and lop off a few heads, regardless of how important the poster thinks he/she is.

The rest is history, much like this thread :)
