Dr. Amado Alejandro Baez: Focus needs to return to fighting Covid-19 spread

Covid-19 Response Committee executive director Amado Alejandro Báez tweeted on Sunday, 5 July 2020 on how attention now needs to return to controlling the spread of Covid-19 in the Dominican Republic. The numbers show the disease is spreading.

He attributes the increase in spread to more testing, reopening of the economy, increased citizen mobility, the electoral campaign and the relaxing of social distancing by Dominicans. Dr. Báez highlights the country this weekend has seen the highest number of cases (Bulletin #108), and the demand for hospitalization in Santiago and Greater Santo Domingo is reaching the presently available capacity.

As cases rise the DR still has a chance to get the spread under control but the usage of masks and social distancing must be enforced. As per this report it is concerning what is happening.

Herd immunity for many diseases is not a "sham". But in the case of CV19 people had hoped there is herd immunity and now we are seeing that antibodies don't protect for long. Not only does this mean that herd immunity from infection may not be possible, but immunity from a vaccine may indeed not be achievable. Both of those are bad. Very bad. CV19 is here, there and everywhere to stay. And longer every day from what it seems the more we learn about CV19 itself.

All the more reason for govts to keep the pot from boiling over. We still need to find a way to treat and eradicate this infection in the body so people don' have to suffer through all of the ancillary effects, stay in hospital for weeks and continue to seed the conditions that allows for a continuous game of infect everyone you come in contact with over and over again. Covid may be here to stay but that doesn't necessarily mean it's a good thing to not undertake some workable mitigation measures to offer some degree of increased protection to the population. The merry-go-round has to be under some control.
