The Dominican Republic U20 soccer team participating in the FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina lost to Nigeria. The odds were stacked heavily in favor of experienced Nigeria, given this is the first Dominican participation in a world soccer cup. In the game, Edison Azcona became the first Dominican to goal in a World Cup.

The Dominican Republic competes in Group D of the FIFA World Cup U20 in Mendoza, Argentina. The first of four games ended on Sunday, 21 May 2023 with a narrow win of Nigeria 2-1 against the Dominican team.

Nigeria scored on two errors of the Dominican team; the DR scored on a penalty. The Dominicans scored from a spot kick 21 minutes into the game after Benjamin Frederick’s tackle inside the box that led to a penalty.

This was a great effort in a super tough division for the DR. Now they must face two tougher teams . The experience will be worth all the training .
