On Wednesday, 14 April 2021, President Luis Abinader and Agriculture Minister Limber Cruz led the symbolic start of the first rice harvest 2021. The harvest is expected to yield eight million quintals in the spring and another six million in the fall.

Agriculture Minister pointed out that rice is the main food crop for Dominicans. The rice industry employs 250,000 to 300,000 people in the country.

“Knowing that the annual consumption is 13.2 million quintals per year and that this year we will produce between 13.5 and 14 million, then, so, on this glorious day, with the support of all sectors, we have the guarantee of stable prices and the supply that guarantees us food sovereignty,” said Cruz.
